World Record Breaking Cyclist Mark Beaumont Joins Myeloma UK Charity Ride

by Holly Blades

Record breaking round-the-world cyclist Mark Beaumont is set to join Myeloma UK for the third time, as their London Paris Ride Ambassador in September 2018.

Beaumont, who lost a close friend to myeloma, an incurable form of blood cancer, joined as Ride Ambassador in 2016. He provided motivation and support to participants all varying in ability. The endurance cyclist will take part in the almost 500 kilometre ride with over 100 other participants from across the UK, including patients and their family members. This four day event should be easy for the endurance cyclist who recently broke the Guinness World Record for the "fastest circumnavigation by bicycle", in less than 80 days covering just over 18,000 miles.

Mark Beaumont said, "I am proud to have supported the Myeloma UK London Paris Ride since the very start. The atmosphere on the ride is wonderful, with so many people who have a connection to or who are riding with myeloma, taking on a stunning challenge and creating memories that will last a lifetime. The sense of positivity, and everyone's ability to make a difference, to help make myeloma history, is incredible and where better to finish as a cyclist than Paris?

"Riding to Paris has a special meaning for me not just as a fan of the Tour de France, but it's where I pedalled back to after 78 days and 14 hours of pedalling around the world. I can't wait to join the riders in September as they take on this amazing challenge."

The Myeloma UK London Paris Ride takes place from 5 - 9 September 2018. Riders will cycle from London to Calais, and on to Paris where they will finish the ride by cycling as part of a peloton, under escort up to the Arc de Triomphe and then on to the Eiffel Tower. Participants will be fully supported by motorcycle outriders, mechanics, physios and rolling road closures.

Director of Income Generation, Barbara Osborne said, "We are thrilled to have Mark join us once again as our Myeloma UK London Paris Ride Ambassador. This is the ultimate ride experience and is truly an exciting and unique four days for our riders.

"Participants of our 2017 ride raised over £328,000 in funds, which contributed to the vital work that we do at Myeloma UK."

Myeloma is a rare form of blood cancer that sees 5,500 new cases diagnosed each year. Funds raised from the ride will go towards patient centred research to find new treatments, improve care and help us reach our ultimate goal of finding a cure.

The third Myeloma UK London Paris Ride is one of three main events the organisation is holding to commemorate their 21st Year, highlighting the work they
have done to date towards making myeloma history and their dedication to continue to do so in the future.
