Velothon Wales, the biggest cycling event ever seen in Wales, has today announced a partnership with Strava, the global online community for athletes.

Strava will facilitate a King and Queen of the Mountains Segment challenge on the legendary Tumble climb in Abergavenny. Riders can join the official Velothon Wales Strava Club, and participants who use Strava on the day will automatically be entered into this challenge, with the fastest male and female participants winning exclusive Strava prizes.

The Tumble KOM crown is currently held by Team Sky's David Lopez with the QOM currently held by amateur rider Alice Dietsch. With the pro race and amateur sportive taking place on the same day, it will be a rare opportunity to compare performances on the same roads during similar conditions as the pros.

As official Social Community of the event, the partnership will also see Strava enhance both the training journey and event day experience of the thousands of participants who have signed up to #TakeTheProRoad at the first ever event on 14th June in Cardiff.

Strava will be offering all participants a free 30-day trial of Strava Premium to aid them in their training. Designed for passionate athletes and using Strava's most innovative technology, Premium provides even more ways to train effectively and stay motivated with unique training plans, enhanced workout analysis, Sufferfest videos, membership perks and more.

The training plans have been designed to improve segment related performance. So for example, if you're looking for help with tackling the Tumble, pick a Strava training plan specifically designed with climbing performance in mind.

Starting and finishing in the heart of Cardiff city centre, general entry places for the closed road sportive sold out within six weeks, with the remaining spaces now available through the event's official charities.

With a capacity of up to 15,000 cyclists, riders will take on the very same South Wales course as some of the world's best pro teams in the UCI classified 1.1 professional road race.

Speaking of the partnership, Simon Klima, UK Country Manager for Strava, said: "Velothon Wales is set to be an amazing experience and we think Strava's platform will add to this further, helping participants train and prepare, as well as comparing their efforts with other members of the global online community for athletes. For participants and cycling fans, we think Strava will add some great insight from the pro riders that upload their activities on the day too".

Andrew Taylor, Velothon Wales' Event Director, said: "We are delighted to welcome Strava on board as Official Social Community. The official Velothon Wales Strava Club will provide our participants with a fantastic tool to interact with fellow participants taking on the challenge in June and we look forward to keeping up to date with how everyone's training is progressing."

He continued: "The King and Queen of the Mountains Challenge on The Tumble is something many of our participants are looking forward to, and we are delighted that Strava will provide the technology that enables us to track the fastest male and female participants."
