Cyclists Travel the Distance of Manchester to Tibet in 24 hour Velodrome Challenge

by Holly Blades

The only event of its kind in the UK, and the first 24 hour event to take place at The HSBC National Cycling Centre, Cyclone 24 saw people put themselves through physical exhaustion and mental fatigue in a challenge of endurance, determination and team spirit, taking over the velodrome track at the Home of Team GB in Manchester, as they cycled non stop for 24 hours.

The challenge saw riders of all ages and abilities face the unenviable task of staying awake for 24 hours, whilst battling physical exhaustion and mental fatigue, not to mention the frighteningly steep 42 degree banking, as they took to the track in teams of six to cycle the 250m laps right through until the next day.

The cyclists taking part cycled 31,996 laps in total, an astounding 4,971.5 miles; the equivalent of travelling further than Manchester to Tibet.

A team of six from online magazine road.cc, led by captain Stu Kerton, took the top spot and were named the winning team for cycling the furthest distance in the 24-hour timeframe.

Speaking about the challenge, Steve Sulley, Managing Director of Stills Branding, who sponsor the event said: "As a keen cyclist myself, we are delighted to sponsor the Cyclone24 challenge for the third year and support the local cycling community and encourage track cycling. I'm so impressed by the efforts of all the teams. Each and every one of the cyclists involved has worked tremendously hard and has helped raise funds for St Ann's Hospice."

Zoe Westerman, Director of Cyclone24 said: "Our events attract all abilities; social cyclists, those new to track cycling and cycling clubs. It's uniquely challenging and something new to set training goals for. We've received some wonderful support for our inaugural event in Manchester, everyone has really enjoyed the challenge and we've raised some money for a great cause."

Since the first cyclone24 challenge took place in 2015, fundraisers have helped to raise over £70,000 for local charities. Event supporters included Battery Drinks UK, Eat Natural, The Primal Pantry, Virgin Active and 42 Degrees Coaching.
