Snowdonia Etape Eryri Ride Report

by Holly Blades

Sunday 11th June saw over 600 cyclists take on a very different version of the iconic Snowdonia Etape Eryri. The popular sportive featured reversed routes for the first time in its five year history, but organisers Always Aim High Events also took the difficult decision the day before the ride to amend the routes in order make the ride safer for the cyclists taking part.

Due to the strong, gusting winds predicted on the day, the decision was taken to remove the 102 mile 'Mawr' loop and use a combination of the smaller Canol and Bach routes to make for a safer cycling experience.

The action began at 3am, with fifty riders tackling the Etape Xtrem. Billed as Europe's longest single day ultra sportive, riders usually tackle all three loops of the Etape Eryri. This year however, the route was changed to a single lap of the 75 mile Canol, followed by three laps of the 46 mile Bach route.

Rory West was the first Etape Xtrem rider to complete the 213 mile course with a time of 12:28:51 - an incredible effort, and less than two minutes ahead of the next rider Mike Skidmore.

A spokesperson for Always Aim High Events said: "It was great to see so many cyclists descend on the Maes in Caernarfon for the Snowdonia Etape Eryri in what was challenging cycling conditions".

"With ascents of Pen y Pass, the Crimea at Blaenau Ffestiniog, Drws y Coed and with gusts of 50 miles per hour plus, completing the sportive was a genuine test of physical and mental strength, and a genuine cycling achievement".

"We'd like to thank Gwynedd County Council and the amazing locals in Caernarfon and along all three routes for the support, and we'd like to thank our event partners Pedalcover Insurance, HIGH5, Superfeet and KitBrix for supplying event goodies and prizes".
