Great Weston Ride Serves Up A Treat

by Holly Blades

The Great Weston Ride, a 56-mile West Country challenge bike ride taking place on Sunday 15th July, has teamed up with North Somerset premium meat producers and event caterers field&flower to give riders something to really look forward to at the end of this year's Ride.

This popular and fast-growing cycling challenge takes participants along a spectacular route through the Mendips and across the Somerset Levels before finishing on the seafront in Weston-super-Mare, and this Summer as a reward for their efforts hungry riders will be greeted with delicious, locally-produced hot gourmet food when they cross the finish line.

Intrepid cyclists taking on the 2011 challenge

Darren McKimm, Ride Organiser, explained: "We're always looking to improve the Ride and to add value for those taking part, and it's all about trying to give everyone a quality experience and a great day out. We know that we've got one of the best challenge ride routes in the country, and now with field&flower on board to provide top-quality food for everyone at the finish we think we've probably also got the best post-ride provision for riders as well. After all, if it's good enough for the likes of Sir Richard Branson and the VIP Lounge at the V Festival, then it's good enough for us!"

"One of our aims is to showcase the best of the West and in that respect field&flower are just a great fit - they're different, they've got a strong West Country identity, and quality is at the heart of everything they do. They've also got great green credentials in the way they farm and produce their free-range meat. We're delighted to be working with them and we know that riders can look forward to a real treat when they finish this year."

Set up in 2010, field&flower (www.fieldandflower.co.uk) are based on their own farm in the Gordano Valley in North Somerset and they source the very best meat from their own and other local Somerset farms, and they now deliver their premium farm produce all over the UK.

James Mansfield and James Flower, co-founders of field&flower

Co-founder James Mansfield commented: "As soon as we heard about the Great Weston Ride we wanted to get involved. We've catered at the likes of Glastonbury and the V Festival but this is a great event taking place right on our doorstep, and we're really looking forward to feeding hundreds of hungry riders at the finish. Our business is going from strength to strength and so is the Great Weston Ride, and it's a natural fit for us. The only difference is that at 56 miles riders will be travelling a lot further than our meat does!"

All Great Weston Ride entrants receive free food at the finish as part of their entry fee, and field&flower will also be catering for friends, family and other supporters who are there to greet riders and celebrate their achievement. So everyone taking part in or supporting the 2012 Great Weston Ride can quite literally look forward to a taste of the best of what the West Country has to offer!

The Ride itself attracts riders of all abilities, with something to offer experienced cyclists and novices alike, and it has had rave reviews from participants in its first two years. The Ride has also helped to raise significant sums for charity - there is no obligation to fundraise, but in 2011 riders raised £22,000 for the Ride's official charity partner, The Prostate Cancer Charity, and well over £30,000 in total across a range of different charities.
