Geraint Thomas Encourages Sign Ups for Action Lake District 100
by Adam Tranter
2012 Olympic Team Pursuit gold medalist, Geraint Thomas encourages enthusiasts to sign up for Lake District 100 taking place on Sunday 23 September.
Geraint says: "I hope people will support Action Medical Research by taking on one of its fantastic cycling challenges."
Lake District 100 is one of Action Medical Research’s popular cycling challenges and attracts keen and passionate cyclists from all over the country.
Participants signing up now can make use of voucher code RIDE2012 to get 20% off the entry fee. There is a choice of a 100-mile or a shorter 100km route circular route setting out from Fitz Park in Keswick. Both take in fantastic scenery as riders cycle alongside several lakes, including Derwentwater and Buttermere, with Ullswater and Thirlmere on the longer route. Riders will tackle great climbs like Honister Pass through Newlands to Whinlatter Pass and some fantastic descents. There are also some sections to ‘rest’ the legs a little.
Cycling enthusiasts can register now to secure their places for the event, which is supported by leading bike brand Trek. Cyclists participating in the Lake District 100 will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Action Medical Research is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2012 and since 1952 has spent more than £100 million on medical breakthroughs to help sick and disabled children.
The charity is currently supporting work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, premature birth, and some very rare conditions that severely affect children. This event is part of the charity’s popular RIDE100 series of one-day bike rides taking place across the UK. All include chip timing, well stocked food and water stations, buffet lunch, free massage at the finish, quality signage and mechanics.
