Howard Johnson: 29th December 1962 - 14th August 2012

by Adam Tranter

It is with regret that I have to inform readers and friends that Cyclosport rider and writer Howard Johnson passed away on Tuesday 14th August 2012.

Howie, as he was known to most, was a caring and larger than life character who always brought a smile to our faces at the numerous cyclosportives he attended.

After writing in his spare time for Team Cycling Plus and then Cyclosport, he rapidly became a well-known and well-liked figure at the heart of the cycling community.

Born in Liverpool, Howie was based in Lichfield, West Midlands, and then in Cambridgeshire. He spent a great deal of time travelling with work and riding events for Cyclosport where he portrayed his passion for cycling and the cycling community through his engaging, honest and witty reports.

Howie will be sorely missed and always remembered by all of us, by our colleagues in the cycling industry and by the cycling community.

Our thoughts are with his family and many friends at this difficult time.

I've just read of Howies death and feel quite shocked. I met Howie at a fair few sportives and we always exchanged a tale or two - we had plenty of time to chat as I think we climbed at the same pace!. I was ever in awe when he told me what he'd ridden and the biking superstars he'd met. He'll leave quite a gap in the sportive scene.
My thoughts and prayers are with friends and family.
