Road and Off Road Sportives Come to Guildford

by Holly Blades

CTC, the UK's national cyclists' organisation, are pleased to announce a weekend of road and off road events from Guildford, Surrey, on 26th and 27th May 2012.

The weekend of 26th & 27th May will see mountain bike and road sportives taking place from the headquarters of the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation in Railton Road, Guildford as the CTC Challenge Ride Series returns to the popular course in Surrey.

Saturday 26th May is the off road day with two routes of either 30km or 50km. Both routes will be fully signposted and have feedstops and mechanical back-up available. Local riders have designed the routes using some of the best trails in the area and are suitable for either mountain or cyclo cross bikes.

Sunday 27th May is the road sportive day with two routes, 57 and 95 miles, through the beautiful Surrey countryside with the option of changing your choice of distance on route if needed. Both routes head in a south westerly direction using quiet roads and lanes through three the different counties of Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire before looping back to the finish in Guildford.

Starting from the national office in Railton Road, both routes go west through quiet roads to the village of Christmas Pie before heading south through the lanes to Tilford and on to Liphook where the first feed stop is located. Here the routes divide with the 57 mile option heading north back to Guildford while the longer 95 mile route continues southwards to Petworth.

Heading north again using the back roads and lanes to Haslemere, the 95 mile route has over 4000ft of climbing with most of it on rolling roads on this section so make sure you have a low gear as there are a few surprises on the way back. There is an additional feed stop on the 95 mile route but both courses pass many cafes so there are plenty of opportunities to stop for refreshments on route.

Both road routes will be fully signposted, electronically timed, have well stocked feed stops, and mechanical back up on route as well as the start/finish.
Entries can be made on-line or by post with a discount for CTC members and group bookings for teams of four or more.
