Anything that will make the job easier and a little more pleasant is welcome, so this pairing from British brand Crankalicious would be earning its keep. All of their products are handmade in small batches and use natural ingredients, no harsh or damaging chemicals here.

We are definitely into the time of year when your pride and joy will need a good clean at least every other ride, if not after every trip out. Some people love to do it, others hate it - I fall in-between somewhere; never overly keen but take time and care when I do.

Anything that will make the job easier and a little more pleasant is welcome, so this pairing from British brand Crankalicious would be earning its keep. All of their products are handmade in small batches and use natural ingredients, no harsh or damaging chemicals here.

First up was the Limon Velo degreaser, supplied in a 500ml bottle with a spray trigger included. The instructions say to spray on to the oily bits, leave for 2-3 minutes and rinse, using a brush if required. My cassette and derailleurs were... more than a little dirty.

The bike had not long completed a 980 mile LEJOG and been ridden a few times since; it had been arbitrarily washed but not cleaned as such. The product sprayed on nicely, foaming a little and smelling faintly of lemon, as you would expect from the name. An old toothbrush was pressed into action to get in to the teeth and work at the dirt, leaving a black oily mess on the parts, but with a rinse from the hose it disappeared to leave a remarkable better looking set of kit.

It wasn't perfectly clean, but for how bad it was, a few minutes soaking in the product and a little scrub worked wonders. Crankalicious do advise a second go may be necessary to get it sparkling clean, but it was good enough for me and meant the product would last a lot longer - you can get through degreaser very quickly if liberal with its application.

With the messy bit out of the way, it was on to the Mud Honey bucket wash. Again, a 500ml bottle was supplied, and the instructions call for two to three capfuls (and it's a small cap) into a small to medium bucket of warm water. I went with two capfuls of the thick, PH neutral gloopy liquid, giving it a swish as it went in to produce a bucket of super foamy mixture - surprising for the relatively small amount of product. I can't say it smelled like honey, but it was pleasant. Using a good quality wash mitt to soak and wipe down the bike, the product left a foaming layer on the bike itself which in a way was strangely pleasing, almost like foam washing a car.

With the whole bike covered and cleaned down, the hose was used on a low pressure setting to rinse it off, leaving a nice sheen with water droplets forming up and running off. No sign of any dirt or dust either, so job done. Drying off with a microfiber towel gave the frame a really nice sheen and a smooth feel to it, way better than using a regular detergent or even the old standby of (heaven forbid) washing up liquid.

Both products together did a great job - used sparingly (the wash especially) they will last a good long time, ensuring your bike(s) will stay clean for many rides to come. The smaller 100ml bottles retail for £4, the larger 500ml as tested at £10, so although there is an outlay the benefits of performance, and all-natural ingredients being kind to the bike, make sense in the long run.
