Inaugural Zappi Brighton Gran Fondo Takes Place in September

by Caven O'Hara

For a lot of riders their 2016 targets have been ticked off or will be shortly but they don't start the wind down too soon. With a new twist on familiar routes there's a new sportive on the block and it's some block.

September 18th will see the launch of the inaugural Brighton Gran Fondo and where better to start the venture than the iconic Preston Park Velodrome. Behind this new event are Zappi Clothing who have teamed up with Brighton café and cycle workshop, N+1.

Approaching The Wall...

So what's different about this one you might ask? Well quite a bit really. Many of the roads and climbs will be known to riders in the area but probably not in one leg crunching, lung bursting edition. There are three challenges on offer, the Piccolo being the shortest, followed by the Medio or stepping up to the full Gran Fondo. That's 44, 78 or 139 miles with 3,257, 5,875 or 10,463 ft of climbing - something for everyone. If you want it in new money that's over 222 Km with 3,107 m of climbing.

This will be a real test of your season's fitness with the climbing starting almost straight away as you head out of Brighton. You do get some respite before the next set of hills but don't expect a lot of easy miles. The route heads north into Surrey and the famous hills before returning to Sussex where you'll detour into Ashdown Forest before turning towards Brighton.

For those wanting to know what climbs await it is a who's who of the best that Surrey and Sussex have to offer. On the Gran Fondo you'll face Leith Hill, Box Hill, Kidd's Hill and not for the feint hearted or tired legs, Cob Lane. With the end near you will still have to negotiate Devil's Dyke before seeing the welcome sight of the City of Brighton.

Kidd's Hill, AKA The Wall

One of several nice touches about the Brighton Gran Fondo is that £7 from every rider who signs up will go towards the Zappi Race Team. This will enable the clothing brand to continue to fund and support cycling at a grassroots levels. One of their former riders, Jason Knox is now riding for Team Wiggins.

To help keep the wheels turning on the day, there will be four feedstops. Fuel will be provided by New Fitter You (NFU) whose aim is to help people achieve their fitness and sporting goals with advice, support and the right products. They distribute Herbalife and Herbalife 24 sports nutrition and their products will be available on the day as will their qualified nutritionists.

If that wasn't enough to get you to sign on the dotted line, then how about a set of wheels from award winning Sussex based Hunt wheels for the rider with the best time on the day? Or 25% off bike servicing for all registered riders on the Gran Fondo?

Register here, and I'll see you on the start line.
