Race Programme Announced for the World Cycling Revival

by Holly Blades

This June, the P&P World Cycling Revival, the greatest celebration of the bicycle the world has ever seen, will take place between 14th-16th June 2018 at Herne Hill Velodrome in London. The event will be a high-end heritage sporting, music and lifestyle festival celebrating 200 years of the bicycle.

The event will be brought to life by an unmissable programme of racing across all three days. Combining much-loved events with lesser-known, but equally as exciting spectacles, wheel to wheel action is guaranteed throughout.

The Japanese Keirin Trophy, run in association with London-based Condor Cycles, is the centrepiece of this thrilling race programme. Incredibly popular in Japan, the daily five-race competition will show off track cycling at its best: fast-paced, breathtaking and unpredictable. In a nod to its Japanese traditions, World Cycling Revival patrons will be able to participate in pool betting on each of the races, thanks to our friends at premium bookmaker Fitzdares.

To give the racing a unique London feel, Condor Cycles are building authentic steel-framed replica bikes similar to those used by British cycling legends Tom Simpson, Dave Bonner and Hugh Porter at Herne Hill Velodrome in the 1950s and 60s. These specifically designed bikes are being built using authentic Japanese components and, to make the racing more about each rider's track skills and strength, all competitors will compete on these replica models.

Former world and British champion David Millar will be among those riders competing in the Brompton '48 Invitational, which commemorates Herne Hill's involvement in the 1948 London Olympics, the first post-War Games. This is a winner-takes-all event, with the victor claiming an incredible £10,048 prize fund. Beginning with a Le Mans-style start, these frantic elimination races will feature the best Brompton racers, as well as wildcards and VIPs.

Two of cycling's most frantic and thrilling races, the Elimination and Madison, will feature throughout the extensive programme. Originating from the USA, the Marymoor Crawl combines the impressive technical challenge of trackstanding and the physical requirements of a winner-takes-all sprint. And the Reverse Win & Out event is a rarely seen in the UK, during which riders must keep up with a pacer while attempting to avoid elimination by crossing the finish line first on sprint laps.

The World Cycling Revival are pleased to announce the inclusion of the Golden Wheel Trophy. Previously the star turn of the Good Friday Meeting, The Golden Wheel has long been the most prestigious race on the Good Friday schedule, with past winners including Maurice Burton (1975), Rob Hayles (1995, 1996 and 1997) and Malcolm Elliott (2006). Organisers of the World Cycling Revival have agreed an exclusive three-year deal with the Southern Counties Cycling Union to host the race.

But more than simply being a racing meet, the World Cycling Revival's lifestyle and musical activities will create a thrilling atmosphere that will make attendance at the event an absolute must for any fan of cycling or heritage events. The event aims to become an annual highlight of the summer social and sporting calendar; creating the best hospitality experience in the sport of cycling.

Event guests will be able to explore a huge array of exhibition space, featuring extensive interactive and engaging displays, which will transport them through the history of this wonderful invention. Exhibitions will include the history of the bicycle, run in partnership with The National Cycle Museum. A number of other must-do experiences will be unveiled on the day by some of the Festival's major partners, such as Exodus Travel. The event is expected to be the largest hosted at Herne Hill since the 1948 Olympics and is run with the support of Herne Hill Velodrome Trust.

Details on further exciting races, as well as competitors, will be announced in due course. Race entries will open in January at

Attendees are encouraged to wear their best vintage cycling gear or 1940s clothing attire, be it a retro merino wool jersey or more formal fishtail trouser and revere waistcoat combo. Find your style online at
