The Granfondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare

1. What is the Granfondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare?

The Granfondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare is one of the top cycling marathons of the international cycling panorama. Named after the world-famous cyclist Fausto Coppi (1919-1960), it first took place in 1987 in Cuneo (Piedmont, Italy).

The Granfondo La Fausto Coppi consists of two different routes, the Mediofondo and the Granfondo. Their course sequences have changed frequently over the years. The current Mediofondo is a round trip of 111 km which starts in Cuneo in Piazza Galimberti, crosses the mountains Colle Fauniera (2.481 m altitude) and Madonna del Colletto (1.304 m altitude), with a total altitude of 2550 m, and ends again in Cuneo.

The granfondo has a length of 177 km, it starts and ends in Cuneo as well, it crosses the mountains Santuario di Valmala (1,380 m), La Piatta Soprana Montemale (1,136 m), and finally the Colle Fauniera and the Madonna del Colletto, with a total altitude of 4125 m. These mountains are among the most beautiful ones of the Italian Alps. Above all the Colle Fauniera is known for the victory of the "hawk" Paolo Savoldelli in 1999 and has thus entered the history of cycling and the Giro d'Italia too.

 2. Who's attending the event?

The international granfondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare is probably one of the most difficult cycling marathons in Europe, in reason of its total altitude (4125 m). However, it is also one of the most beautiful and therefore most popular thanks to the picturesque setting of the Italian Maritime Alps which surround the city of Cuneo and provide stunning landscape views and attract numerous outdoor lovers. On average, the rate of non-Italian participants is around 35%. Approximately 2,500 cyclists participate in the race annually.

Both Italian and international cyclists of both sexes who are at least 17 (completed) and until 70 years of age can register for the race. In order to participate it is required to be a member of an Italian cycling association  or of a National Cycling association. Anyone who does not dispose of a membership can purchase a one-day membership card for the duration of the competition. This has insurance reasons and presupposes possession of a medical certificate attesting the ability of the candidate to compete in the medio fondo or the granfondo races.

Pro riders as well as Under 23 rider or elite cyclists may participate in the race only for promotional purposes and they must be invited by the organizing Committee of the event. However, they will not be timed or ranked in the final classification. Participants under 16 or over 70 years can enroll exclusively for the mediofondo.

Every year, a new jersey of the Fausto Coppi is presented to the fans. If you want to run the race, you have to wear the jersey which is included in the starting package. The jersey displays the flags of all the nationalities that have being taking part in the race during its 30 editions. It has become a collector's item that some cyclists wear for the entire duration of their cycling season, in order to proudly testify their participation in this challenging race.

 3. La Fausto Coppi celebrated its 30th anniversary

In 2017, the granfondo, which started in Cuneo on July 9, has celebrated its 30th birthday. The organization put together a program of several major and minor events to celebrate this important anniversary.

In 2018, the granfondo will start in Cuneo on July 8. The organization is busy putting together a full program of various events besides the main of the Granfondo and the Mediofondo. Since the beginning of November the registrations are open.

Starting grids have been abolished from 2009 and a 100 seats charity grid has been set up to support the project "Save the mountain roads". For a fixed charity fee of 100 € one can start in the first row and contribute to the restoration of some the mountain tracks and roads of the Fausto Coppi.

On the completely redesigned www.faustocoppi.net website you can get an insight into the jersey's historical collection and get further useful information and news about the Granfondo La Fausto Coppi.

The event attracts the attention of the Italian RAI broadcasting television (regional station), the "La Stampa" national newspaper and many other newspapers, on top of the regional media and journals, as well as Italian and European bike magazines. Also in 2016, La Fausto Coppi received a recognition by the French magazine Le Cycle, which classified it as one of the most beautiful granfondo events in Europe.

 4. Tourism in Cuneo

Cuneo and its surroundings are a suitable destination for families, thanks to a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. From climbing and cycling, horseback riding and sport fishing, to water sports (such as canoeing and kayaking) and golfing, there is something for everyone who likes to move and be active in their free time. The Natural Park of the Maritime Alps (Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime) in Valdieri is crossed by many hiking trails and thanks to its many lakes, is also ideal for taking a swim.

If wellness is an essential part of your holiday, you can spend a day or two in one of the four thermal spas of the region (for example Terme Reali di Valdieri).

The cultural offer includes museums, castles, wine tastings and, of course, a rich selection of restaurants, where you can indulge yourself with the wide range of regional delicacies.

The Cuneo region is also renowned for its excellent wines, such as Barolo or Barbaresco, and is, last but not least, home of Nutella® and many other traditional sweets featuring the famous Piedmonts' hazelnut.
