Alpine-Rootz Mythical Mountain Tour
11/06/2012 - Nice to Geneva - Holiday
Alpine-Rootz Alpine Mythical Mountain Tour:
Here is an overview of what we've got planned: For more information please go to our website.
Tuesday 12th June - Day 1: Nice to Barcelonnette via the Col de la Couillole, then the Col de Champs and Col d'Allos. These are all great cols and this promises to be a fantastic days riding. For those in the know, this route replicates the 1975 Tour de France stage which saw Bernard Thevenet become a French National hero overnight as he stripped the Cannibal Eddy Merckx of his Yellow jersey and subsequently went on to defend the lead in style - all the way to Paris. Our 'stage town' of Barcelonnette is simpy a wonderful town with a strong Mexcian influence on building design. The quaint market town and narrow streets make this a lovely place to relax after a superb but heavy day's riding
Wednesday 13th June - Day 2: Barcelonnette to Briancon - via the iconic cols of the Col de Vars and the Col d’Izoard. Another great day with truely mythcial cols - 60 miles in all and you should remember each and every mile - especially the famous Casse Deserte section towards the top of the Col d'Izoard.
Thursday 14th June - Day 3: Briancon to Moutiers via the mighty Col du Galibier and Col de la Madeleine. OK - It's two big Hors category climbs but we'll be there as usual to provide the support and we know that you wouldn't want to miss a challenge like this for anything in the World!
Friday 15th June - Day 4: Moutiers to Megeve (or La Clusaz) via Bourg St. Maurice and the well known cols of the Cormet Roselend, Saisies and Aravis. Each of these cols has something unique and special to offer: The Cormet calls are constant gear changing due to the many changes of gradient as you work your way up the climb. At the top you will be able to see Mont Blanc sitting majestically on the horizon and there is also some fantastic mountain scenery on offer as you descend past le Lac du Roselend on the way down to Beaufort. The Col des Saisies follows soon after and again fabulous views of Mont Blanc should be readily available. Finally, the Col d'Aravis is probably the quaintest col in the Alps: the gradient is never too severe and there is simply one hairpin and bend after another as you wind your way towards the summit!
Saturday 16th June - Day 5: The final day of this fantastic tour starts from Megeve (or La Clusaz) and our first climb is well frequented by the Tour de France - the Col de la Colombiere. There follows a fast long descent to Cluses before the final Col de la Jambaz. All that remains is the long run down to Thonon les Bains - our final destination on the shores of Lake Geneva.
It's a tough 5 days but of course that is part of the attraction! Don't forget, we’ll be there to provide top class support both whilst you are on and off the bike. See our website www.alpine-rootz.com for more details
