Wiggle Sussex Surrey Scramble
13/08/2017 - Pulborough, West Sussex - Sportive
Weeks to go until event: less than 20 weeks
Some of the best cycling action in the south of England can be found on the North and South Downs - and this links the two as the routes combine both Sussex and Surrey to give you a day of frequent mild climbing action and sublime scenery on a carefully selected series of quiet and sheltered rural roads.
Starting just outside Coneyhurst, you'll cross the River Arun and head south, encountering the first troublesome gradient of the day shortly before you pass through Fittleworth. This, like most of the hills on the whole route of the day, should provide a gentle test for the legs as small ascents such as these crop up little and often.
Entering the South Downs National Park, another small challenge lays in wait just before Upwaltham - followed by another soon after on a twin-peak mini-test. Continuing on a clockwise loop, the next small climb around 10 miles later should be the last of the taxing ascents of the day as you head upwards on the map, this time towards the North Downs.
These moderately hilly surroundings will not pose too much of a threat, making for more of what could be described as a lumpy section of terrain until the finish line. Short and sharp hills will present themselves occasionally but you're likely to appreciate the rolling roads that stand between you and a finisher's medal, t-shirt and PowerBar recovery product waiting for you at the finish line.
