20/02/2016 - Worcestershire - Audax

Rating: Rate this Event Now

Parking is limited at the GHQ and some participants will need to park and ride to the start from a mile away.

Before the Event: The HQ will be open from 7.15am and you are welcome to purchase hot drinks and food.

On completion of the ride you will be given a FREE food voucher that will entitle you to:

A mug of tea or coffee
Beans on toast or a
A slice of home-made cake.

Please be aware that we have asked the cafes on our event whether they are willing to host a control. However cyclists riding the event arrive as normal customers and should use the cafe with normal courtesy. Very large numbers of riders may arrive at the same time and, despite the notice they are given, this may stretch the cafe staff to their limit. Please be patient, understand the situation the cafes are in and show due consideration to their non-cycling customers.

Car parking is tight at GHQ, so early arrivals will be asked to park a mile away and to cycle to the HQ.

Raphaels Cafe, Evesham is a delightful cyclist friendly cafe on the banks of the River Avon serving a variety of hot & cold food.

Bridge House Tea Rooms, Upton upon Severn has hosted our control for a couple of years now and the proprietors are very familiar with hungry cyclists needs.

The Route

The official route uses quiet country lanes between the controls, for the most part. Whilst this part of Worcestershire does not possess any huge range of hills, it can be surprisingly lumpy and testing so early in the season. The only hard climbs last for about five minutes when passing over a ridge to the north of Evesham known as The Lenches. Between Evesham and Upton, the route follows the River Avon.

The contingency 'gritted route' follows B and A roads for most of the journey and is only advised when it is icy. For the most part, the roads are not too busy but riders will need to utmost care when passing through Worcester. Of course, the grit all depends upon the Council sending out its lorries the night before!

Snow stops play

There is always a small risk of the event being officially cancelled due to all of the roads being blocked by snow, as happened in 2009. If this does happen the participants will be given the opportunity to ride under 'permanent audax conditions' at a time of their choosing within six weeks of the cancelled event. All you will need to do, is collect proofs of passages at nominated controls and send your Brevet card to the organiser. Entrants will be sent details if this becomes a requirement. Refunds won't be awarded but any financial surplus made from the event will be donated to the brain injury charity, Headway.
