It's Britains big season opener - The 2012 Wiggle Cheshire Cat promises to be the biggest and best yet. In 2011 3,000 riders entered and we're prepared for even more in 2012 with some exciting changes and improvements in place. We've got 3 challenging routes around Cheshire - including one of cycling's most notorious climbs if you opt for the long or medium route option - The Mow Cop Killer Mile. For 2012 'The Cat' has additional attitude with the inclusion of Gun Hill too - the well known Tour of Britain climb. Of course there are more hills too but this ride isn't all about climbing, Read on, then watch the videos
Why you must ride 'The Cat'! - For many thrill-seeking sportive and challange riders, 'The Cat' is simply a must do event. There's nothing quite like it! For the 6th Cheshire Cat we're delighted to welcome Wiggle as our primary partner again - the UK's official number 1 online bike retailer. By riding Wiggle Cheshire Cat you are also helping us to raise awareness and create sponsorship opportunities for our 2012 charity partner, Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research UK are the worlds leading cancer charity.
First big sportive? - Then take a look at the route maps near the bottom of this page. You'll need to create a log-in here (free) to download route information and the event manual which explains more about what goes on, when, why and how. Heres just a snippet about each of the routes.......
The Mow Cop Killer Mile - The name comes from the running race which takes place on this astonishingly steep hill each year. It's also the famous cycling climb but there are no prizes for fast ascents; but anyone who has the mettle not to walk, stop or put a foot down on the ground does get a medal. Watch the videos.
45 Mile option - Doesn't include Mow Cop and might appeal to those who prefer a bite-sized sportive. Still a considerable challenge with two notable climbs - Radnor Bank near Congleton and the climb into Holmes Chapel. This might be suitable as a first ever sportive or family ride; and with a feedstation halfway round you'll be kept topped up with energy drink and body fuel.
74 Miles - Our medium length option packs quite a punch. Riders tackle the Mighty Mow Cop Killer mile (15.5 miles) which really does test everyone. There's plenty of less punishing Cheshire countyside to enjoy throughout this ride though too.
100 Miles - This full-on option takes in all of the major climbs but also takes a delightfully smiley Cheshire Cat meander through lots of quiet lanes back to Crewe.
