La laurentine Andrei Kivilev
26/05/2012 - St Laurent du Var (near Nice) - Sportive
Rating:
La Laurentine Andrei Kivilev
12 March 2003, the Kazakh rider Andrei Kivilev, racing for Team Cofidis, tragically died from head injuries after falling on the 2nd stage of Paris-Nice. Kivilev regularly trained on the roads of the Nicoise hinterland often in the company of his Kazakh compatriot, Alexandre Vinokourov.
To honour Kivilev, the management of Stade Laurentin Cyclisme decided in 2006 to rechristen their annual randonee La Laurentine Andrei Kivilev .
The 7th edition of this event in Kivilev's memory will be held on Saturday 26 May 2012 and will again include a timed cyclosportive, raced under UFOLEP rules, open to all entrants.
Three routes are proposed:
- 175km with 2.532m of climbing
- 105km with 1.242m of climbing
- 40km along the traffic-free cycling tracks of the Var valley
Last year's event attracted over 400 elite, professional and local riders including Alexandre Vinokourov (Team Astana), Geoffroy Lequatre (Team RadioShack) and Amael Moinard (Team BMC) not forgetting plenty of visitors from Switzerland, Italy, UK, Germany and other regions in France.
The races were started by Mr Torekeldi, the Kazakh Ambassador to France who later helped local officials award the prizes. Andrei's widow, Nathalya Kivilev, accompanied by their son were also in attendance.
This year we're hoping to attract more riders from outside the Cote d'Azur and have invited a team of young Kazakh riders to take part along with those Kazakh professionals who live in the area, including Alexandre Vinokourov. It is anticipated that other professional riders who live locally will again support the event.
