The Tour of the Ouse Valley Sportif is a non-competitive, timed cycling event designed for road cyclists able to ride 120 km at a speed of between 25km/h (15mph) and 32km/h (20mph) The route looks relatively flat, but in reality is a rolling course with some fairly exposed sections, making it a true challenge.
The event has a strong charitable element, with £7.50 of each entry going to the Geoff Thomas Foundation - many sports fans will be familiar with Geoffs career as a footballer, fewer might know that he was diagnosed in 2003 with Leukaemia. Geoff, following his recovery, has embarked on a number of challenges in order to raise both funds for, and awareness of, the fight against Leukaemia. The route, as mentioned in the summary, is deceptive - its not flat, and although it lacks dramatically steep or difficult hills, it can be a trying course, especially if the weather is windy as large parts of it are quite exposed. Wed characterise some of the roads as "heavy".
We use this course regularly as a training route, so we have designed it to be as traffic free as we can, and weve endeavoured to keep it well out of town areas. It does pass through several villages, though, and some of them are quite picturesque.
