Location: Braunton, North Devon
Starting in Braunton, North Devon, both the 100km and the 100 mile routes follow the same roads until Lynmouth and the first feed stop.
The ride HQ will be at Lobb Fields Camping and Caravan Park in Braunton. We have secured discounted rates for anyone wishing to camp there over the weekend and they have kindly agreed to allow campers to leave tents up during the ride without a late stay fee, so that you dont have to wake up at the crack of dawn to pack away your tent before riding. The park has ample, good quality showers for everyone taking part and food and drink will be available at the site. For those turning up on the day, there is plenty of parking for everyone.
After leaving Braunton, riders will follow the coast past Croyde and into Woolacombe and then on through Morte Hoe and Lee to Ilfracombe. Prepare for some sharp climbs and fast descents on quiet lanes!
After leaving Ilfracome, there is another tough but absolutely stunning section, passing through Combe Martin, Martinhoe, Woody Bay and on to Lynmouth via The Valley of Rocks, where the two routes separate. 100km riders will climb out of Lynmouth on the beautiful section of the A39 that follows the East Lyn River and head over Exmoor towards Simonsbath. From the feed station at Simonsbath, they will head back towards Blackmoor Gate, over the moor and then hit quiet lanes again and they make their way back towards Braunton. The 100km route contains over 2100m of climbing so it is not easy!
100 mile riders face a very hard climb out of Lynmouth, up Countisbury Hill, with 20%+ gradient for the first 200m! After Countisbury Hill, a lovely descent to Brendon follows, and then a ride along the East Lyn valley through Oare (of Lorna Doone fame) and back up to West Porlock. Riders will then head towards Exford and a 4 mile descent followed by a 3 mile climb! (neither of which are particularly steep though)
At Simonsbath, riders can rest at the second feed stop before heading back towards Lynmouth. More quiet undulating roads will then direct riders back to Braunton.
Make no mistake, this sportive is tough! The 100 mile ride has almost 2900 metres of climbing and many of those climbs are fairly steep. However, not only will you finish the ride with a great sense of achievement, you will have enjoyed fabulous scenery, great company and will want to do it all again next year! Plus there will be free Black Rat cider available at the finish for anyone who fancies a tipple!
