This is the 12th consecutive year that the South Western Road Club has run this event. There is a choice of two routes; the Flyer 80km route meanders around the North Downs while the 140km Flyer Challenge crosses the North Downs on the way to Amberley in Sussex before returning along a different set of mainly country lanes.
Both rides are reasonably challenging, with more climbs on the longer route; however, both take in the tough climb of Coombe Bottom (tackled by a different route on the outward and return legs) which some will enjoy more than others! All should enjoy the quiet country lanes of Surrey and Sussex.
Both routes start from the public car park in Cobham, Surrey, and are fully marked and sign-posted. There are two intermediate checks on the shorter route; one at Hydestyle, where the long and short routes split) and one at Ellens Green (where both routes re-join). There is an additional check on the long route near Bury, where the ride crosses the A29. Brevet cards will be signed at the checks and refreshments will be available free of charge. Sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks will be on sale at the finish at Downside Village Hall, just over a mile from Cobham car park (parking is not available at Downside Village Hall).
Riders will sign on in Cobham (parking is free on Sundays) and depart at intervals in small groups as directed by our marshals. Everyone will be given a start/finish time which will be logged on the SWRC website. The event is not a race, but riders completing their chosen route will receive a bronze, silver or gold award according to their age and the time taken. All participants will be given a copy of the route map with emergency contact details. There will be a SAG wagon following behind to pick up any riders as necessary. Start times will be from 9.00am to 9.45 am and registration will be open from 8.30am.
Third party insurance will be arranged but personal accident insurance is NOT included and riders take part at their own risk. In the interests of their own safety, the event organisers strongly advise riders to wear a hard shell helmet that meets an internationally accepted safety standard. All participants are expected to follow the rules of the road at all times.
Entry on the day will only be allowed if the maximum number of riders has not been reached.
