The Herald VW Cycle Tour

The weekend-long festival of cycling kicks off with the mountain bike challenge in Addo on the Saturday followed by the road events in Port Elizabeth on the Sunday. The 105km Classic, which starts and finishes at Hobie Beach is known for its scenic coastal route around the “wild side” of the city. The 46.8 km route starts on good gravel roads with a portage across the Berg River, followed by riding on scenic gravel roads to the back of La Motte village. The first climb of the day is some 3.2 km long with an average gradient of 7.8%, with a fast descent behind the Mont Rochelle Hotel.

Both routes head out along Spaanschemat River Road and over the eastern side of Ou Kaapse Weg to Sun Valley.
