I was participating in a Cyclosportive and caused an accident in a group and another cyclist suffered injuries and damage to his bike.
You should report the accident immediately to the incident helpline on 0845 210 6405 and pass on any claim to them and/or any injuries or damage suffered by yourself. The personal liability and legal expenses cover will handle any claim(s). Our insurance includes participant to participant cover.
I hit a raised drain cover while out training. I'm not injured but my bike and kit is damaged. What should I do?
You should report the accident immediately to the incident helpline on 0845 210 6405.
The Legal Expenses and Advice benefit will explore the possibility of making a claim against the local Highway Authority who have a duty to maintain the public highway or the utility provider responsible for the drain cover.
It is important to be aware that Highway Authorities have a statutory defence available to them if they can prove that they have taken all reasonable steps to maintain the highway to the standard necessary to accommodate the ordinary traffic that passes along it.
Photographic evidence of the defect is crucial, as it is common for defects to be repaired once an incident has been reported to the local authority, leaving no evidence of the defect should liability be disputed by the Local Authority. In addition, where possible, measurements (depth/height, width and length) of the pothole or defect in the highway should be obtained.
Do I need to wear a cycling helmet to be insured?
No - but Cyclosport.org recommends that ALL cyclists to wear a suitable helmet whilst riding their bike at any time. Whilst there is no legal requirement to wear a helmet, if you suffer a head injury as a result of the incident the third party insurer could argue that your compensation should be reduced if you were not wearing a helmet. They are likely to argue for a 25% reduction but this is a matter to be decided by medical evidence.
A growing number of Cyclosportives events require helmets to be worn at all times as part of the entry requirement to participate. No Helmet - No Ride!
It's a no brainer to protect your brain!
