2013 will see two Tour Rides follow in the wheeltracks of the professionals; these rides are a celebration of the Tour of Britain (15th - 22nd September). Amateurs will be able to ride in Stoke on Trent and Peebles.
In parts 1 and 2, we looked at the types of continental events, the riders, teams involved and hopefully started to give an idea of what to expect. This article will expand on how to train and plan for these events, plus give a selection of events to ride.
Southern Sportive's road season begins this weekend with the Joker, with its headquarters being Salisbury Race Course. This is a unique post April Fools day sportive, featuring a variety of special challenges including the cobbled 1:4 Gold Hill in Shaftesbury (the hill made famous by the old Hovis adverts).
The Wiggle No Excuses Sportive kicked off the UK Cycling Events 2013 season with Prostate Cance UK reaping the benefits form the event.
HotChillee, the cycling events company behind The London-Paris, The Alpine Challenge and The Cape Rouleur is holding its second annual UK one-day sportive on 6th April, starting in Esher, Surrey. The ride is part of the training for The London-Paris in June and The Alpine Challenge in September but is open to everyone.
In the professional races you’ll see riders throwing empty gel sachets, bar wrappers, bottles and even musette bags to the side of the road. These races have a responsibility to clean up after the riders and employ teams of people to pick up litter after the race has moved through the area.
Our focus in this and future articles will be on 'sportive' racing. The first thing you’ll notice is that most are run on closed roads. The very large events may have roads closed for the whole circuit, while smaller sportives will have rolling road closure enforced by marshals, motorbike outriders and lead cars.
The Malvern Spring Sportive is a new event, set to take place on 12th May and the organisers promise something a bit different.
