by Holly Blades

The Marlow Red Kite Ride sportive, which takes place on Sunday 2 September 2018, is now open for entries. In its seventh year, this popular event which is run by Marlow Riders, has three routes to suit all abilities.  Distances of 50, 80 and 100 miles make the most of the beautiful Chiltern Hills and rolling Oxfordshire countryside, providing a challenging and rewarding day out for all riders.

Each route is clearly marked with marshals at key points and feed stations at regular intervals. Once again the 100 mile route, which is ideal for those wishing to crack the 'century' for the first time, as well as more seasoned riders, goes through the stunning grounds of Eythrope Park.

The headline charity for the 2018 Red Kite Ride is Marlow Wheels for All, based at Bisham.  Marlow Wheels for All is part of the National Inclusive Cycling network run by the charity Cycling Projects, and provides weekly cycling sessions enabling disabled children and adults, and those with poor health, to take up cycling, helping them to make cycling part of their lives.

Project Development Officer, Matthew Wing commented; "Learning to ride a bicycle is one of life's milestones, perhaps a white-knuckle introduction to mobile independence. Some refer to it as a rite-of-passage thing however, other parents we talk to just long to see their child enjoy an activity that many parents take for granted. Thanks to the support and very generous donations from the Red Kite Ride Marlow Wheels for All has been able to develop its inclusive cycling project.

"We have used previous donations [from Marlow Riders/Red Kite Ride] to help buy various specially adapted cycles such as the side by side tandem that has become very popular & can often be seen out on the paths around Bisham Abbey every Saturday."

Matthew concluded; "The funding from Marlow Riders will really make a big difference & it's great to see a community cycling club that goes out of its way to support projects like ours. The parents and the volunteers who help run the weekly sessions will be thrilled with the news."

Chris Health, Chair of Marlow Riders commented; "The Marlow Red Kite Ride continues to go from strength to strength, proving popular with local cyclists as well as those that have traveled a long way to enjoy our beautiful countryside. We canvassed our membership for the choice of this years charity beneficial and Marlow Wheels for All was the most popular choice by quite some margin. We are delighted to be supporting this extremely worthwhile charity once again."

So far the Marlow Red Kite Ride has raised over £40,000 for cycling related charities.
