Biggest Sportive Challenge in the Peak District Fills Fast

by Holly Blades

With just over a week to go before entries officially close it looks like this year's Wiggle Tour of the Peak will sell out again reaching its self-imposed safety limit well before then. With entries already surpassing 1,000 there's still space for some more entries.

With over 1,000 entries it's the most popular but also widely recognised as one of the toughest Peak District sportives on the calendar - respectfully acknowledging its namesake, the historically significant bike race of the post war years.

These days, it's the only sportive to take in the three iconic Peak climbs of Cat and Fiddle, Winnats Pass and Holme Moss. At over 1,800 feet Holme Moss is the highest classified road in England. This year the organisers have added a shorter route option of 'just' 47 miles; but this route still takes in Cat and Fiddle as well as Winnats.

Organiser Geoff Saxon raced in the Tour of the Peak in the 1980s and remembers; "This ride tests a cyclist's mettle - just like the bike race used to. Pure riding skill, strength (physical and mental), stamina and determination - you need a bit of everything rather than being a master of one or two things to beat this terrain. Even with a late spring date you can still get caught in cold hill fogs in the Peak District. It's some of the toughest but most rewarding cycling terrain in Britain but also an incredibly popular and busy area with tourists these days."

Full details of Wiggle Tour of the Peak are available Entries are still open but places are limited and the event is likely to close very soon.
