Dartmoor Classic 2014 Launches

by Nick Gregory

Entry to the 2014 Dartmoor Classic will open on 21 October and, for the first time since its inception, there will be no increase in the number of available places.

The highly popular fixture sold out all of its 3000 places in just 4 days this year. "With the phenomenal success the event enjoys, there is always the temptation to just keep growing with each edition; but for the time being we need to consolidate before considering further growth." said Guy Langworthy - the dynamic new leader of the event's planning team.

"If we are to continue to satisfy the needs of participants, we have to concentrate on delivering the quality of promotion on which the event's reputation has been built, rather than, year-on-year, letting in ever more riders." he added.

Due to a major land development project at the event's established home, its Welcome Village relocated to Newton Abbot Racecourse this year; a move which proved a steep learning curve for the organising Mid-Devon Cycling Club.

"After staging 6 editions at Abbrook Park, setting up at the new venue proved a real challenge and it was almost like starting with a clean sheet of paper again." said the village's site manager, Steve Sanders. "Given that it was a big leap forward for the club, I think we met the challenge well. From what was learnt this time we now know the few areas we need to improve to maintain the high standards we pride ourselves on. Feedback from the riders was generally appreciative of our efforts and we're working on some of their suggestions to make things even better next time."
