Miguel Indurain to Ride Mallorca 312 in 2014

by Nick Gregory

Five-time Tour de France winner, Miguel Indurain will wear the iconic '312' event number during next year's edition of the Mallorca 312.

Five months before the event takes place, the man who dominating cycling during the first half of the 1990s has confirmed his participation on the 26th April 2014. Indurain thus joins a list of famous cyclists who have already taken part, including: Pedro Horrillo, Ă"scar Pereriro, Joseba Beloki and Ă"scar Freire.

Considered one of the best cyclists of all time, and still an inspiration for young riders, Indurain won five consecutive Tours de France (1991-1995), the Giro d'Italia twice, Paris-Nice, the DauphinĂ© LibĂ©rĂ©, the Volta a Catalunya, the world time trial championship and the Olympic time trial in 1996.

The Navarra native made his debut in the 1984 Tour de l'Avenir with the Reynolds team, taking his first professional win in the time trial on stage 10. Originally excelling in the discipline, by 1987 Indurain had worked hard to improve his climbing ability, and results soon followed. He won the GP of Navarra, the Vuelta a Galicia and the Setmana Catalana. That year he also finished his first Tour the France - two hours behind the winner Stephen Roche.

In 1988 he helped Pedro Delgado win the Tour de France, and 1989 brought personal overall success in Paris-Nice, the CritĂ©rium International and his first stage of the Tour de France. His 17th place in the overall classification signified the definitive breakthrough.

Having beaten Greg LeMond at Luz Ardiden the previous year, in 1991 Indurain become the undisputed leader of the Banesto team, and utter domination of the Tour de France was to follow for the next five years. During this time he also won the Giro twice, before ending his professional career with an Olympic time trial gold medal at Atlanta in 1996.

Eighteen years later, the participants of the Mallorca 312 - Iberostar Playa de Muro will have the opportunity to cycle alongside Indurain. The bravest amongst them might even try to challenge him along the 312km cycling marathon. The number of registered participants is already eclipsing previous years, and the fifth edition of the event is expected to be the most spectacular to date.
