New 19-mile Event Added to Prudential RideLondon

by Holly Blades

A new 19-mile mass participation cycling event on traffic-free roads was launched today (Wednesday) as part of the Mayor of London's Prudential RideLondon 2018, the world's greatest festival of cycling, with 100,000 riders expected to participate in eight different events over the weekend of 28-29 July.

Starting at Sandown Park in Surrey, the new event will take in the final 19 miles of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 route, going through south west London, over Putney Bridge and into the centre of the capital to the spectacular finish on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 19 has been created to encourage younger and newer riders to take part in their first mass-participation cycling event and to provide an opportunity for families and friends to ride together. The event is open to riders aged 12 upwards.

Today, 12 pupils from both the Mayor of London's former school Ernest Bevin College and from Hornsey School for Girls completed a Bikeability lesson and became the first riders to enter the inaugural 19-mile event.

They will participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 19 as part of Prudential's PruGOals programme, which helps young people from low-income families to develop life skills and encourages personal motivation.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "The Prudential Ride London-Surrey 19 will be a great way of inspiring more people to take to two wheels, and it is going to be a wonderful opportunity for less experienced cyclists to ride through the world's greatest city on traffic-free roads.

"I am delighted that students from my old school are among the first to sign-up and I am sure they will feel a real sense of achievement by taking part."

Denise Turner-Stewart, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "Starting at Surrey's Sandown Park this event is a great opportunity for families and newer riders to experience cycling on traffic-free roads. It's sure to build on the success of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 and 46 events to broaden the appeal of the cycling festival still further."

Prudential, the inaugural sponsor of the Mayor's RideLondon event, today also announced the extension of their title sponsorship for a further two years, up to and including the 2020 event.

Mike Wells, Group Chief Executive of Prudential, said: "Prudential RideLondon is not only the world's greatest celebration of cycling but also one of Britain's most important charity fundraising events. Prudential is delighted to renew its partnership with this unique festival and to extend our PruGOals programme to introduce even more young people to cycling."

Hugh Brasher, Prudential RideLondon Event Director, said: "The new 19-mile event provides the perfect opportunity for new riders of all ages to enter their first mass-participation sportive. The continued support from Prudential, our founding title sponsor, means we can continue to develop the world's greatest festival of cycling and the new event is the ideal next challenge for families and young riders who have enjoyed Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle."

The ballot is now open for general entries for Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 19. Adults taking part in the event, riding with or without a child (12 to 16) are required to pay an entry fee of £29. There are an additional 600 discounted entries at £10.00 reserved exclusively for community groups in the host boroughs of Elmbridge (Surrey) and the London Boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Wandsworth, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster.

Young riders aged between 12 and 16 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is 18 years or over, and must be able to demonstrate their cycling competence. This can be shown during registration by completing Level 2 of the Bikeability programme or by being a member of a British Cycling Club.

Prudential RideLondon is now in its sixth year and firmly established as the world's greatest festival of cycling. It combines the fun and accessible element of a free family ride in central London and mass participation sportives with the excitement of watching the world's best professional cyclists in action.

The events offer all cyclists, from beginners to professionals, the opportunity to experience London and Surrey's roads without traffic with support from Transport for London, Surrey County Council and the host boroughs.
