I turned out for the Wiggle Shropshire Mynd sportive and had a great day in the South Shropshire hills on a good course with great support.  Organisers Kilo to Go have been going for years and offer nine excellent sportives throughout the year. Their experience, expertise and equipment really help make the sportive series an excellent one. The Shropshire Mynd was based at the Shrewsbury Football ground so there was loads of parking and a well appointed events centre on hand.  Flags, an inflatable start/finish arch, a PA announcer, sponsor tents, and a mechanic were all available.  Because the bike numbers and timing tag had been sent out by post there were no queues and it was easy to pitch up and get in the start pen.

Set up

On time we were set off in groups of around 20 after a safety briefing.  Two courses were on offer: 100 or 60 miles.  The split was after 20miles so there was time to assess how you were doing and make a choice at the split.  After a couple of town round-a-bouts we got on a road heading out of Shrewsbury and stayed on it almost all the way to the first food stop.  Cyclists were clumped in lose groups with the odd chain-gang slipping by.  It felt like many people were new to riding in lines.  The long road out of Shrewsbury was gently uphill but after Pulverbatch came the steep Harold's Bank which sorted people out.  Roads were virtually car free especially early in the morning.  I did spot a motorcycle First Aider pass us during this section: always reassuring to think someone will be along if you end up in a hedge.
