2018 Great Weston Ride is "On the Ball"

by Holly Blades

Bristol's Great Weston Ride, the mass-participation West Country cycling event taking place on Sunday 15th July 2018, has announced a major new partnership with Sussex-based food manufacturer The Protein Ball Co to help keep riders going during this year's challenge.

The Great Weston Ride is a well-established and popular event that starts in Bristol then heads off into Somerset's Mendip Hills and across the Somerset Levels before finishing on the seafront in Weston-super-Mare, and the addition of The Protein Ball Co as its official 'Energy Product' partner introduces riders to a range of snacks that are ideally suited to their fuelling needs at the event.

Hayley Hunt, co-founder of The Protein Ball Co, commented: "We're delighted to be working with the Great Weston Ride this year and we're really looking forward to helping all the riders with their nutrition. We've previously supported a number of local running events, but this is our first partnership with a major cycling event and we're really keen to add value to the whole experience and to riders' enjoyment of their big day out."

The Protein Ball Co has created a range of delicious all-natural, high-protein snacks in various flavours and their honest-to-goodness protein balls are handmade in Sussex by the sea with a few select healthy ingredients that are rolled into a soft, easy-to-eat snack.

As well as being healthy and nutritious (and of course tasting great), these protein balls are gluten-free, wheat-free, and vegetarian, and they contain no soy, GMOs, or added sugars.  And they offer three clean protein sources - whey, egg white, and rice & pea - which also gives a vegan-friendly option.

Darren McKimm, the Great Weston Ride organiser, said: "We're delighted that The Protein Ball Co is supporting the GWR and has become our latest major Event Partner.  As many people already know, the Ride offers a spectacular route and a significant challenge for pretty much everyone - a choice of eight different route and distance options sees to that - and with The Protein Ball Co on board this year we're introducing riders to a great product that will definitely help them to tackle the challenge that the Ride presents. We've tested these for ourselves and they're great - and super-tasty too!"

"They're just perfect for health-conscious fitness enthusiasts like our riders, and we're looking forward to working with Hayley, Matt and their team to see if we can add even more value to the GWR as the partnership develops."

The Great Weston Ride is in its ninth year and its reputation is very firmly established - the Ride appeals to cyclists of all abilities with its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and significant numbers of people travel to the area each year to take on this delightful West Country challenge.

The Ride also actively encourages charity fundraising and to date riders have raised over £275,000 for charitable causes, with the lion's share of this going to support the Ride's official charity partner Prostate Cancer UK.

The event has sold out in advance every year to date and 2018 looks like being no exception, with previous riders' comments demonstrating that anyone who enters can expect both a challenge AND a wonderful Somerset day to remember.
