Chiltern 100 Sportive Added to Human Race Sportive Series

by Nick Gregory

Human Race is delighted to announce that the Chiltern 100 Sportive has been added to their prestigious Sportive Series in 2014.

The event, which takes place on 1st June, will be organised in partnership with the Verulam Cycling Club of St Albans - the cycle club that created the event eight years ago and made it the esteemed and challenging sportive that it is today.  General entries will open on Friday 24th January at 9am, with high demand expected after the event sold out in a few weeks in 2013.

The Chiltern 100 Sportive is the latest addition to the Human Race Sportive Series which also includes the Wiggle Dragon Ride, Financial Times London Cycle Sportive, Wiggle Etape Cymru and the Macmillan Cycletta women-only cycle series supported by Victoria Pendleton.  Human Race are committed to delivering world class experiences for cyclists of all abilities in some of the most stunning parts of Britain.

The Chiltern 100 Sportive will offer 2 route options. The Grand Fondo takes in approximately 176 km of beautiful Chilterns scenery and riders will be challenged with 2700 metres of climbing. This route is relentless in its pursuit of hills with 21 in all. The Medio Fondo is approximately a 76mile route which includes 1,897 metres of climbing and provides possibly the toughest 122 km challenge one can find. Both routes are as testing as they are stunning, and take in infamous climbs such as White Leaf and Wardrobe.

As the UK's largest organiser of mass participation events, Human Race have pledged to add a number of elements to the event to enhance the participant experience, including a new start/ finish venue that allows for ample onsite car parking, added rider safety, times via text message and more feed stations.

There will also be improved route management through the provision of motorcycle marshals, which will significantly improve safety on the route and the overall rider experience. All feed stations will continue to be manned by experienced cyclists who have the rider's needs in mind and are experienced in cycling in the area. Mechanical support will also be available on the route and as with all Human Race sportives, finishers will also receive the official event medal as they cross the line.

Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race commented: "the point of difference to the Chiltern 100 is that it offers the most challenging terrain of any sportive close to London. Adding an event of the prestige of the Chiltern 100 to our portfolio is hugely exciting. The event has been developed through the passion and commitment of The Verulam and it is great to be able to work with them on one of the 'must do' sportives in the UK".

Human Race is also working with The Verulam to help develop grassroots cycling by annually investing a significant donation into the club to create new cycling opportunities for the development of youth riders in the St Albans area. This will include finding facilities and developing coaches to help give children from local schools the opportunity to discover cycling and provide the necessary support to take them into racing or club level riding.
