Another Successful Christmas for Sportive HQ

by Matt Porter

Sportive HQ, managed to raise over £7000 for two charities with their Festive Fifty Sportives. Two events back to back over the New Years Weekend. On speaking to Matt Porter of Sportive HQ, we find out what it's all about.

I started the original Festive Fifty back in 2015, a half size sportive of 30 miles, 50 miles with fancy dress and based at a time when there isn't a lot going on in the sportive calendar, between Christmas and New Year. It was super popular and managed to raise £2500 for the local Neonatal Intensive Care Units. In 2016 we managed to increase the entries and double the amount of money raised.

In 2016 a little friend of mine Jessica had heart surgery at just two years old and this got me thinking about what we could do to help? A second Festive Fifty was born, Festive Fifty Yorkshire along with the crazy idea of running the events on the same weekend back to back, I like to test myself!

The events have gone down really well with riders throughout the region and some even rode both events which was great to see them pushing themselves as was I, in running two events next to each other. I must say come New Years Eve night time, I wasn't out celebrating I had nodded off on the sofa by 10.30pm!

I've already started booking the venues for the 2018 editions and will aim to raise £10,000 for the two charities, The Health Tree Foundation and Children's Heart Surgery Fund in the one weekend.

If it wasn't for our summer events the Roux Bikes 100 Series, now with 4 events throughout the summer months, we wouldn't have the infrastructure to be able to do the Christmas events. Our four summer events, don't profess to be the toughest events on the market, what we wanted with these was for them to be accessible to as many people as possible and we achieve this by keeping them affordable at £22.50 each and with moderate amounts of climbing but nothing too scary.

The Roux Bikes Series raise money for BLESMA, the charity for limbless veterans and also raise money for local cycling clubs for them to raise awareness of cycling in the regions close to each event. Sportive's are great but I've always had the feeling that they need to support cycling and give something back to the community in which they are based.
