There's Still Time to Take to the Chilterns and Tackle the Howler II

Leading though the Buckinghamshire countryside, into the Chilterns and back across the Aylesbury Vale, the Howler is a beautiful ride taking in some quiet roads and lively climbs.

Having been inspired by the Tour of Britain, this year organisers have made a subtle change to include the challenge of Kop Hill, which featured in Stage 6 and worked so well for Alex Dowsett.

Pink Hill, Bledlow Ridge, Haw Lane, Walters Ash, Naphill and the Hugenden Valley are just some of the other highlights of the opening 50 miles, and other lesser known gems such as Smalldean and Leather Lanes mean the short route doesn't equate to an 'easy' option.

But it's not just about the hills. Once again both routes lead riders in a figure of eight giving the choice to either return back to the start at the 50 mile point or carry on.

As one previous participant said: "A great feature was the way the long and short routes split near the start/finish so you could choose to do the extra 30 miles at the end of the 50. On many sportives you have to commit to the long route much earlier, and then regret it if you've misjudged your fitness."

If you have ever watched Midsomer Murders you could be forgiven if it feels like Groundhog Day, as much of the Haddenham and the surrounding area has been used in filming.

Take a look at last year's YouTube video to get a taste of The Howler -

The Howler is fully supported with well stocked feed stations (including the legendary pasta pancakes for those without a sweet tooth), and a broom wagon in case the bike fails you.

Entrants will also receive:

  • A free copy of Cyclist Magazine (first 250 entries)
  • A free online training session with 'Manx Royalty' at 3LC.TV
  • A free online event certificate

The chip timing results will also be published online, courtesy of and once again event photos will be available to download free of charge from the website.
