The Maratona dles Dolomites - Enel, one of the world's most challenging and picturesque one-day gran fondos, has opened its registration process for teams and individual riders.

Fast becoming Italy's must-attend event, last year saw over 30,000 entrants apply for the 9,000 available places, and organisers are expecting even higher numbers for 2015.

Pre-registration costs just €2 (£1.58 / $2.55), with the participation fee being €89 (£70, $114) plus a €10 chip deposit. This process will be managed by Datasport, click here to pre-register. Registration will close on Wednesday 5th November, and the draw will be made in late November.

After this, two batches of 193 tickets will be made available to raise funds for the charities Südtiroler Sporthilfe, Insieme si può and Alex Zanardi's BIMBINGAMBA Association. These will go on sale in November and March - see charities page for details.

The Maratona dles Dolomites was first run in 1987, and its challenging route and spectacular scenery has seen it grow in popularity since then. It started as a 175km route that tackled seven passes and had 166 competitors, only one of whom was female.

Three routes have been planned for the 2015 event, which takes place on Sunday 5th July in the Alta Badia region of Italy. The full Maratona takes in eight Dolomites passes over 138km, with 4,230m of climbing. The middle course is a 106km route with 3,130m of climbing over six passes, and the Sellaronda, short course, covers 55km of some of the most beautiful scenery in Italy, climbing four passes and 1,780m during the ride.

The organisers have additionally announced the "Maratona for kids by Sportful", which will take place on Saturday 4th July, and a new clothing partnership for the official Maratona kit with the prestigious Italian cycling brand, Castelli.

The Maratona was rated by Cyclosport as one of the Top 5 Overseas Sportives.
