The team at Open Cycling - organisers of the Coast to Coast in a Day sportive - have just announced plans to add a new event to their portfolio: 'Wales in a Day', set to take place on 26 September 2015.

Wales in a Day is aiming to challenge even the most hardened of riders. Coming off the back of the success of Coast to Coast in a Day, the team listened to feedback from participants about new and harder challenges, and were inspired to look into an area that would deliver on all counts.

Not only does Wales in a Day offer more distance (190m rather than 150m) and more ascent (4500m), it also presents the additional challenge of less daylight, coming as it does later in the summer.

The event will start in the historic town of Caernarfon, with its famous Castle, and will finish 190 miles later in the equally historic town of Chepstow, with its equally famous castle. You can probably see a theme developing... The route takes in some of the iconic passes in Wales including the Llanberis Pass and the Gospel Pass, and will take riders through some of the most scenic countryside Wales has to offer.

As with all things Open Cycling, the team will look after your every need, especially feeding you along the route. There will be four feed stations at regular intervals with lots of fantastic food, sweet and savoury, and drink to help you on your way. The intention is to have bike tech support at the feed stations, medical support along the route and a friendly face or two to cheer you on your way.

Unlike many events, Wales in a Day - and its big brother, Coast to Coast in a Day - don't feature aggressive cut off times, despite their length. As long as you are riding the flat and down hills, you spend no more than 20mins in each feed station, and you start between 4am and 5am, the course will be open and you will find the team at the finish to welcome you, whatever the time.

Coast to Coast in a Day has already been rated by Cyclosport as one of the Top 5 Toughest Sportives in the UK, and with this in mind, the final word from Open Cycling regarding the severity of Wales in a Day is sure to strike fear into the hearts of many cyclists:

"For those of you who have joined us on the Coast to Coast in a Day you will know that our aim is to help you achieve your goals, and as long as you have put in the training, start at the right time and do not linger along the way we will be there to see you home no matter how long it takes. However, as a note of caution - Wales in a Day will be a more serious challenge."
