Recently featured by mountain expert, Mike Cotty in his Col Collective series, Mont Ventoux is arguable the most feared mountain in professional cycling. On June 28 this year the team behind Gran Fondo New York is giving riders the chance to tackle the 'Bald Mountain' in the inaugural GFNY Mont Ventoux.

Synonymous with the death of British rider, Tom Simpson during the Tour de France of 1967, Mont Ventoux has been the setting for some of the most dramatic moments in the history of professional cycling. Legends such as Charly Gaul, Raymond Poulidor, Eddy Merckx and Marco Pantani have enjoyed Tour success on the mountain.

Most recently, Chris Froome claimed a stage win atop the Ventoux en route to overall victory in the 2013 Tour. The route of the 2015 GFNY Mont Ventoux includes the same start area, first 50km and last 25km as that 2013 Tour de France stage.

The race is staged in Vaison-la-Romaine and finishes atop Mont Ventoux, arguably the world's most iconic cycling mountain where many Tour de France stages were held and legends were born.

The long route is 87m/ 140km and has 11,500ft / 3500m of climbing, whilst the medium route is 71m / 115km and has 9,800ft / 3,000m of climbing.

Both routes travel over several cols and finish at the summit of Mont Ventoux. From there, riders enjoy a relaxed post-race descent (30km) back to Vaison-la-Romaine to take part in the finish festivities.

At 6273ft, Mont Ventoux stands tall overlooking the vineyards and olive groves of Provence; a landscape of incredible diversity that will be fully explored on the GFNY Mont Ventoux. It features typical Provencal stone villages with centuries-old squares and fountains that attest to the outstanding artistic and historical heritage of the countryside surrounding the foot of Mont Ventoux.

Vaison La Romaine is perhaps the best example of this; the medieval town, situated six miles from the Ventoux is internationally renowned for its Roman ruins. The town combines the romanticism of the centuries past with inhabitants who are some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet, keen to share the culture and traditions of their town.

Tours (guided or self-guided) Hotels, B&Bs and luxury Provencal houses in Vaison-la-Romaine can be booked on

GFNY Mont Ventoux will be part of the 2015/16 GFNY World Season. The Championship will be in New York City on May 16, 2016.
