by Nick Gregory

Entries for one of the country's biggest mass cycle rides, the Virgin Money Cyclone Challenge, are set to open on 1 November 2013.

The event, which takes place on Saturday 21 June 2014, attracts over 3,500 cyclists every year from beginners and families to professional riders. Taking place on the scenic roads around Newcastle and Northumberland, it is now an integral part of the UK's cycling calendar.

For the first time the professional men's race, held on Sunday 22 June, will be accredited by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The UCI is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events. The Sunday race, The Beaumont Trophy will therefore become part of the UCI European Tour Road Race Series.

UCI events regularly attract top cyclists from all over the world and with such accreditation, some of men's cycling's biggest names will be competing. The Cyclone already regularly attracts the very best of British cycling and previous participants have included Sir Bradley Wiggins. Last year's Beaumont Trophy was won by Team Madison Genesis rider Dean Downing.

Paul Lloyd, Marketing Director at Virgin Money said: 'The Virgin Money Cyclone continues to go from strength to strength and the announcement that the Beaumont Trophy is now a fully accredited UCI event shows the appeal and attraction of the Cyclone. The Sunday racing continues to attract some of the sport's biggest names and is a great spectator event for all the family. The 2013 Virgin Money Cyclone was a fantastic four days of cycling but I am sure 2014 will be the best Cyclone yet."

Peter Harrison, the organiser of the Cyclone said: 'I'm thrilled that the Beaumont Trophy has been given UCI Accreditation and this means that fans of the Cyclone and cycling in general will be able to see some of the world's best cyclists in action on the roads of Northumberland. Over the course of the festival, around 5,000 riders of all ages and abilities are able to participate in this inclusive and unique cycling event.

"The Tour de France Grand Depart is also taking place in Yorkshire shortly after the 2014 Cyclone, so yet again it is set to be another remarkable year for British cycling and I am expecting a flood of entries following today's announcement. The Virgin Money Cyclone is now one of only four UCI accredited cycling events in the UK.'

The festival also includes the Tyne 6 Bridges Leisure Rides on Thursday 19 June, which attracted nearly 500 riders in its first appearance last year.
