Tour of Califonia launch cyclosportive events

by Adam Tranter

The organisers of the Amgen Tour of California have announced two new sportive rides, taking place in April. The Breakaway Rides are presented by Specialized, and follow some of the actual routes of the early-season Tour.

The two events will be held in April 2010 to help raise funds for Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer initiative. Each 'Breakaway Ride' will give cyclists the rare opportunity to ride part of the actual route for the 2010 Tour of California. There'll be a range of distances to suit different abilities too; the longest route being the same as the pros will complete in one stage.

As you'd expect, riders will be time chipped and given professional support, and places are limited to 3,500 riders per event. A portion of each rider's entry fee will be donated to the cancer charity partners, and there will be a chance to win extra gifts and prizes for raising additional funds. One of the prizes on offer is a shiny Specialized carbon bike.

The two Breakaway Ride dates are: Sunday 11th April 2010 & Sunday 25th April 2010. The first event will follow the Stage 8 route through Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills. The event on the 25th April will be the Stage 2 route from Davis to Santa Rosa.

Registration is now open, and closes at 3,500 participants; you can enter by clicking here.
