Substantial enough to keep you warm and dry, but portable enough to stick in a jersey pocket, this is everything you want from a gilet, and more.

Cyclists, generally, are a pretty obsessive bunch. We spend hours deliberating over what wheels to buy, what to eat and what to wear. Given how changeable the weather can be in the UK, this often makes a good gilet one of the most prized garments in a cyclist's wardrobe.

The spring and autumn months are really where it earns its value, on those days when it might rain or it might not; it might get too warm for a jacket later but it's too cold for just a jersey when you set off. You get the picture. It's there for when you need it, and tucked unobtrusively into your back pocket when you don't.

The new lightweight gilet

Established in 2009 by two avid cyclists during a ride in the Yorkshire Dales, Shutt Velo Rapide began with a simple mission; "to create a well-designed, high quality brand of cycling garments using performance fabrics that don't cost a fortune."

The company's headquarters are based in Oxfordshire, and where possible Shutt VR source all their materials from within the UK, with manufacturing also taking place locally in Leicestershire. This commitment to authentic local craftsmanship is noticeable throughout the range, which has a refreshingly British feel to it.

A quick look around the very slick website is enough to realise that Shutt VR is a cycling clothing company with a difference; from the Heritage Jerseys and tweeds caps to the understated but stylish performance apparel, there is something here for every taste and need.

Distinctive design

Stylish logo

You get the sense that Shutt VR is very much run by serious cyclists, for serious cyclists - who appreciate quality and the extra touches that go into every item they produce. Nevertheless, there is also an understanding that not all cyclists have the body type of Sir Brad, and accordingly garments are designed to fit your everyday rider, "racing cut but not too tight, comfortable but still fitted."

As well as the usual range of essential on-bike clothing such as jerseys, bib shorts, jackets, socks and gloves, Shutt VR also serve up some quirky and unique casual items that set them aside from other competitors, including an eye-catching and extremely cosy looking bobble hat for winter. Whilst the price tags at the top-end of Shutt VR's ranges reflect the fact that you're paying for some of the very best in professional standard gear, there are offerings to suit every budget - with bib shorts ranging in price from £29 (currently in the sale) to £99.
