One Day, Two Cycling Events in Britain's Smallest Town

by Nick Gregory

Sunday April 6th sees two great cycling events taking place in Llanwrtyd Wells in picturesque Mid-Wales. On this day, Britain's smallest town will host both a road sportive and a mountain bike challenge courtesy of local organiser Red Kite Events.

The Devil's Challenge road sportive offers route options of 50, 83 and 122 miles set amongst quiet country roads with epic scenery all around you. All three routes will tackle the infamous Devil's Staircase 16 miles in to the ride before separating to give each route its own distinct character and challenge.

The 50 mile route takes in the Tirabad climb and the Lyn Brianne reservoir whilst the 83 miler climbs up to the Cothi Valley and Usk reservoir before gently rolling back to the finish. The monster 122 mile route adds to the 83 mile route climbs with the Bwlch Cerrig Duon and the climb to Crai which results in over 5000 metres of climbing in the one ride. The 50 and 83 mile options offer over 1300 metres and 2600 metres of climbing respectively so whatever route you choose, 'bring your climbing legs' is the motto of the day.

If the call of singletrack and the feel of dirt under your tyres is too strong to ignore though, The Little Devil is the one for you.

Also run by Red Kite Events, The Little Devil is a mountain bike challenge of 60km in length and 1800 metres of climbing. Starting from Bromsgrove Hall in Llanwrtyd Wells the route takes you up in to the stunning Cambrian Mountains and around the Crychan and Irfon forests. The route will include technical climbs, descents and singletrack on a variety of surfaces from bedrock to loose dirt and rooty, technical sections. This is a true test of both your mountain bike skills and your fitness.

Price of entry is £25 in advance or £32 on the day with camping also available at £5 per tent.

Both events will be fully supported with very well stocked food stations, emergency support and event photography. They are also supported by High 5, SealSkinz, Velocite Bikes, Continental tyres, JDRF, Trail 42, Muc-off and the award winning local restaurant, The Drover's Rest, who will be stocking the feed stations with home baked treats to complement the High 5 energy products available.
