The Daddy of Sportives! This was my first FW and to sum it up in two words, it is brutal and brilliant!
I have taken part in a number of Sportives including the Wiggle Dragon Ride and I have to say that the organisation, spectators and marshalling were fantastic and the best that I have experienced.
The Fred Whitton is without a doubt one tough ride, the climbs are extremely hard, leaving you feel battered and bruised, however the sense of achievement when completing it is well worth every minute of the pain.
As for the course itself, it was simply breathtaking (literally at some points)!!!
The Fred Whitton is everything you want from a sportive and a lot more thrown in. Loved it, hated it and cannot wait to tackle it again.

I took up cycling 6 months ago and the Fred was the first event I've done (a bit optimistic in hindsight!). I just want to echo all the comments you see below, this is a brilliant event. The organisers should feel immensely proud of what they have achieved here. While marshals and local people stood in driving rain to cheer complete strangers on Cold Fell, I was catching the cycling bug. I feel privileged to be one of the relative few who get the chance to enter. This is going to be a tough one to beat. Chapeau!

Head and shoulders the best organised ride I've ever done. This is a real adventure and has fabulous scenery, the best route you'll ever find and the hardest hill in Britain at around 100 miles. You'll need to be fit.

Second year of doing the FW and it delivered as good as the first. Unbelievable course that takes you through some of the best scenery in the country (when you can see it through the weather lol). The climbs take your legs to some dark dark places whilst some of the decents take your arms to the same place. Emotionally you go through everything from elation to hysteria and back to elation again. This course packs everything a cyclist could ever ask for and it certainly gives you your moneys worth.
The organization, marshaling and support is faultless. All starting from the registration, support throughout the course and finally to collecting your finisher certificate at the end you couldn't ask for anything more.
Would recommend this event to anyone interested but it is not to be taken lightly. 112 miles, 6 major passes and 3 additional unmentioned climbs that still provide a challenge on there own right.

First time for me but definitely not the last! Fantastic event, great course and the support from marshals and local people was incredible. Going up whinlatter hearing the bells, car horns and cheering people was an unforgettable experience. A superb advert for the area and huge thanks to the organisers!

This is the second year I have done this event and found it as challenging as the first. There are ups and downs both emotionally and physically especially with the weather as it was on Sunday. The marshals make it all worth while, no matter what the weather was throwing at them they always had a word of support at some points even stopping cars for cyclists to join roads which where I come from is un-heard of. I do think however this event would benefit from a third feed station, earlier than Buttermere perhaps at the base of Matterdale at the Aria Force NT carpark perhaps it would just break it all up a bit more. I also think the whole event would benefit from a bit of a party on the Sunday evening maybe a band just so everyone who has completed it can have a bit of moment with all those that have finished with them rather than just leaving. Other than these few thoughts I am once again massively grateful to the people that organise this event, rider safety is always top of the list for them and makes me feel honoured to be part of such a great event. I'll be back next year.

Definitely the best sportive I ever did! Well organised from the ballot to the finish line! As hard as expected and the support from the marshalls and the crowd made a massive difference. I loved the bells which you could heard from far and which kept you going! One or two things that could be improved: energy drinks at the feed station, and I would have really loved a medal at the end instead of the note book and pen and certificate. I would definitely recommend this and am sure I will be back to ride it again! I would also encourage other female riders to have a go! You can definitely do it! Let's get more than 5% female riders next year!

I have done many sportives in the UK, this was definitely the best - fantastically organised, great marshalling and brilliant supporters all along the route (especially over Whinlatter). This is also the most challenging - it isn't called the 'Daddy' for nothing and don't expect anything but wind and rain - it is the Lakes after all!

A fabulous day out.
Tough, Epic, Beautiful, Emotional....well it was for me anyway.
Cannot wait to come back and do it all again next year (if I get a place), well organised, lovely supporters, brilliant marshals..all of this, and it's absolutely beautiful.

A mega day out in the saddle. The scenery is unbelievable the hills are unforgiving the descents exilirating and real sense of achievement if you complete this. Without doubt the real stars of the show are the marshals who brave whatever the lakes throw at them and still they have time for a smile and encouragement whilst carry out top notch job. Also the crowds of support are unlike any other. Which makes the day unforgettable. My only gripe isn't really with the organisers but if they enforced stronger penalties ie added time/disqualification or larger advertised green zones it may deter the certain riders from thinking it's perfectly acceptable to throw rubbish (spent energy gels sachets inner tubes and any other bit of crap) all over such a beautiful part of the world. Which was the only low point to see. Apart from that it's a must for all cyclist if you dare accept the challenge

Often rides are overhyped and under deliver - not this Daddy. This was a fantastic and hard day out in the saddle, although I felt sorry for the people walking the 1st climb - a long day ahead for them I think. This is a well organised sportive that should not be taken lightly.

Really Enjoyed a tough event. The support from the crowds of supporters around the route absolutely made this event for me. It was really special to be part of such a big well supported event, this despite pretty rough weather conditions!

100% want to test myself again against the course.
100% would recommend the event - just make sure you like climbing !
