A great event organised by volunteers in memory of a good friend. The fact that it all runs so smoothly and the profits are going to charity makes it a great day out. Going up is hard work but take care on the descents!

Fred whitton is an exceptional event which is well organised.
The major bonus of the fw is that it's for charity and not for some greedy organiser to charge you a fortune to bike on open roads which you can do anytime you like.
It's the hardest event in the uk and hats off to anyone who takes part.

Grasmere is a small village in a close community and the organisation, support and overall feel of the event was superb. I absolutely loved it (even Hard Knott & Wrynose) and thoroughly recommend it to everyone so enter the lottery. There are only 2 food stops and this very hard ride is not ideal for new or less fit riders in fairness. Also, get a triple chainset :-)

This is a tough event that's a whole tier above any other 100 mile plus sportive.
The distance, although far, is not the challenging aspect of this ride, it's the shear unrelenting climbing involved.
Even the descents provide little respite, as they are harsh, winding and with terrible road surfaces that saw me personally melting a brand new set of expensive brake blocks to the wear limit.
This event demands that you train hard for it, as those Lakeland passes will exact a heavy toll on the ill prepared, but if you're able to lift weary eyes from your front wheel, then the national park will reward you with sights of some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful vistas to be found anywhere in the British isles, and for a second, just a second, legs made of vulcanised pain are forgotten.
The event staff and volunteers are superb, and both local residents and visiting walkers alike, seem to have an understanding and deep respect for what you're going through, and with genuine cheers and encouragement , they line the route in heart warmingly large numbers.
Do this event at least once if you want a real challenge to feel proud of yourself for completing, but be warned, this one is not for the faint hearted.

Brilliantly supported ride, marshals controlled traffic so well it felt like a closed road event, mechanics were so helpful, fixed my bent hanger which saved my ride, replaced my friends 2 broken spokes, the Lake District is a beautiful area, climbs are so tough but the roads generally really good, and it wouldn't be the Fred without lots of rain! Would recommend to anyone looking for a serious challenge

Great event! Having done many sportives and as someone who works in events, the day was fantastic, the staff were kind and friendly. I couldn't quite believe just how supportive all the course stewards were in such testing conditions.
Many thanks
Matt

The weather made things very difficult for me as I had just flown out from California and the course is brutal. I ended up riding the event with a cold. The event staff and other riders were incredibly supportive and there were large crowds cheering you up the hills and locals even came out of their houses to cheer you on. Top class event.

Fantastic event run very well - a few minor lessons could be learnt from other events to ensure smoothness across the board.
