The Skylark - "Tour climbs and so much more"

The Skylark Sportive brings together several of the key Tour de France 2014 climbs - including Cragg Vale and Holme moss - stunning upland landscapes, ancient roads threading along high moorland edges, stone-built hamlets, weavers' cottages and thrilling descents. In short, it's a wonderful introduction to the UK's most fashionable cycling region, the South Pennines.

When: The event takes place on Sunday 13 April 2014

Where: The event HQ is close to the tourist town of Holmfirth, fives miles south of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire and easily accessible from both M62 and M1 motorways

The Routes: three options, 40km, 60km and 100km, all ending with a climb of the king of Yorkshire's many climbs, Holme Moss.

Entry: three routes and three prices: £25, £20 & £15. Enter the Skylark Sportive

What's Special? The route. It gives you two or the Tour de France's feature 2014 climbs, but it's the wonderful landscapes and amazing roads in-between that will really blow you away.

Who made it special? We asked local riders to design the route and nominate their favourite roads, climbs and landscapes. They helped us avoid busy roads and, more importantly, gave us insider tips on the roads they ride and love and which visitors often miss. As a result, the route is a challenge and a delight in turns.

Three Routes:

The Skylark Sportive includes three route length options, 100km, 60km and 40km. The 100km option includes two of the most significant climbs of the 2014 Tour de France Stage 2 route through West Yorkshire - View Routes on Event Website

Designed with the help of local riders, the 100km ride starts close to the picturesque town of Holmfirth, just South of Huddersfield, then loops northwards to Cragg Vale, famously the longest uninterrupted climb in England and a major feature of the Tour's 2014 visit to the area.

The Skylark then concludes with an out and back ride up the legendary Holme Moss - three miles of exposed, steep and challenging road that clings to the Eastern fringes of the high Pennines. Holme Moss will be another major feature of the Tour route.

A Rider's Event:

But the Skylark Sportive is not just about the Tour climbs. With the help of local cyclists, we have chosen routes that also highlight the region's amazing roads and outstanding landscapes. From ancient moorland roads, threading through tiny hamlets, to sweeping descents along South Pennine valleys, the Skylark is a rider's event, full of interest throughout.

There's naturally lots of climbing, but especially on the minor roads, the routes really flow beautifully - those road builders of old knew how to follow the contours to ease a journey across the hills and the Skylark explores several sections of upland road that have been around for centuries.

With all the nutritional support you'd expect on a modern sportive, this is a testing event with over 1500m of climbing on the full 100km route, ideal for stretching your legs after the long winter. Two shorter Skylark Sportive route options, both still taking in the iconic Holme Moss climb, are also available.
