CAPE ARGUS PICK N PAY CYCLE TOUR Every year in March, over 35,000 cyclists from around the globe descend upon Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in the largest timed cycling event in the world: the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. This event has the unique distinction of being one of only two events outside of Europe to be part of the UCI Golden Bike series (the other race is based in New Zealand). This title is granted by the International Cycling Union to the best funrides around the world, in recognition of their superior quality, slick organisation and contribution to tourism and sport. THE RACE The Cycle Tour takes cyclists through some of the most beautiful suburbs and conservation areas around the Cape Peninsula. Starting in the Cape Town City Centre, participants make their way along the picturesque M3 highway, passing the University of Cape Town and the beautiful Southern Suburbs before speeding through the historic seaside towns of Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown. The challenging climbs up Chapman's Peak and Suikerbossie provide the final physical and mental challenge of the race before cyclists enjoy the downhill to the finish in Green Point where they are met by family, friends and a carnival atmosphere. The race is also renowned for attracting a diverse set of participants. And while a myriad of fun riders and disabled athletes from all walks of life tackle this route, albeit for personal achievement or to raise funds for charity, it is the elite set of professional cyclists who provide the competitive edge to this prestigious event. Robert Hunter of Team Barloworld won the 109km 2007 race in 02:32:36, while Anke Erlank-Moore won the ladies' race in 02:48:29. Handcycling machine and 6-time winner of the Boston Marathon, Ernst van Dyk, returned to the field to defend his title, which he retained when he earned top spot in a time of 03:22:52. The Cycle Tour also celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007, with a number of Tour de France greats, including Jan Ulrich, Steven Rooks and Greg LeMond participating in the event. Behind the Scenes No stone is left unturned when it comes to ensuring that all participants enjoy a safe and comfortable ride.
