Grand National Park2Park

13/05/2018 - Hampshire - Audax

This will be the third year for this event organised by Southampton CTC under Audax UK rules. It has proved very popular and last year attracted a full entry. The 200km course has been designed to enable riders to see something of Britain's two newest National Parks as well as visiting some of the exceptional scenery in the lovely country between the two Parks.

The ride starts at the well-appointed Woodley Village Hall on the outskirts of Romsey where parking, free tea, coffee and biscuits will be available, and luggage can be left for the day. Highlights of the morning are crossing the famous Watercress Railway Line at Ropley (look out for steam trains!), wonderful views across the South Downs and Isle of Wight near East Meon, and the new lunch stop at Whitchurch, with its beautiful Georgian silk mill still working and producing period costumes for the film industry. In previous years, the lunch stop was at Hurstbourne Tarrant, but the numbers of riders have made it necessary to spread the demand.

Shortly after lunch, we encounter the first chevron of the day on the climb out of Hurstbourne Tarrant before taking in a host of beautiful local villages on our way south west towards the New Forest National Park. Just before tea at Downton, we will meet the challenge of Dean Hill, a popular venue for hill climbs among local cycling clubs. Although the event is only two years old, Jim Probert's gazebo on the green at Downton is quickly assuming legendary status as a tea stop. From here, we follow New Forest lanes to Godshill. It is then a fine fast spin across the Forest to rejoin the Test valley at Romsey, where you should look out for the wonderful abbey, before finishing at Woodley Village Hall, where well-earned post-ride refreshments will be available.

The route is not flat but neither is it especially hill. In fact, there are just enough hills to make things interesting.  For those seeking a gentler day out, there is an accompanying 100km event using the same start and finish, and also retaining the original lunch stop at Hurstbourne Tarrant. The weather in the south of England is often at its best in mid May and the roads are still quiet, so why not plan to join us on one of these two attractive events. We will be pleased to see you, but do get your entry in on time as the popularity of last year's rides meant we were unable to accept late entries.
