14/09/2019 - Manchester to Blackpool - Charity Ride

Rating: Rate this Event Now

The 100km adventure starts in Drinkwater Park, just north of Manchester City centre. You'll join National Cycle Network Route No.6 which heads north through this lovely, large parkland. Before long you have the first of the optional extra loops where you can choose to go along the fun, but not too challenging, 3km blue grade Waterdale Circuit Trail in Prestwich Forest Park. If you've enjoyed and fancy more riding like this, you can head over to the Philips Park figure 8 trail, a 3.5km red grade route just a couple of hundred metres through the woodland in Philips Park.

After your fill of singletrack riding on these trails continue on your journey along the NCN.6 route, along an old railway line and the Irwell Sculpture trail to the outskirts of Radcliffe. Here you join a quiet, peaceful part of the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal Towpath with a variety of different surfaces - cobbles, dirt and metalled tracks leading you around Nob End and Moses Gate Country Park.

Refreshments await at Leverhulme Park in Darcy Lever, energising you for the next stretch around the top of Bolton, using nice dirt singletrack through Seven Acres Country Park and passing right by the front door of Hall I'th' wood - an early 16th Century manor house, a Grade 1 listed building which is now a museum.
Leaving Bolton behind you'll ride through Smithills Country Park, past the popular Open Farm and it's variety of animals. Remember to turn and appreciate the far stretching views to the south, looking for Manchester and the start of your ride as you climb up through the old manor grounds onto Smithills Moor. Permissive bridleway paths lead you across the wonderful open moorland before skirting the imposing hillside edge of Rivington Moor.

The descent off this hillside has everyone talking - it's a rough and rocky ride which could dish out snake-bite punctures to the skinny tyre brigade. Don't worry, if you don't fancy this rocky horror there is an alternative way down. Then the most challenging part of the ride is over and the rest stop is just a short spin through Rivington Country Park where you can celebrate in the cafe.

The ride is anything but over yet though! After a picturesque spin along the banks of the reservoirs, there is an optional loop around the technical, and very entertaining, Healey Nab MTB trail. This rooty and rocky 2.5km woodland singletrack red grade trail won't be to everyone's taste, but definitely worth the detour if you like the rough stuff.

A short road spell follows but you'll soon be off-road again, picking up a good cycle friendly trail alongside the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and peeling off at Whittle-le-Woods to cruise through the Cuerden Valley Park to the half way point. Yes, we're only half way! 50km riders will start their adventure here.

The riding gets a bit easier from here on; you'll pick up an off-road cycle path along an old railway line to Preston, where you join the River Ribble to the Docklands. After the refreshment stop at the UCLAN Sports Arena, and possibly a quick call in for cake & caffeine at the Final Whistle Café, the route heads west along the Lancaster Canal towpath - you'll almost be able to smell the sticks of Blackpool rock now.

The route joins the dark side soon and you'll follow quiet back roads to the coast, where Lytham Windmill will greet you, silhouetted against the sea and sky. The ride is nearly over, but there is still nearly 15km of coastline to conquer! You'll make your way along the bustling promenade, past the funfairs and rollercoasters, to the foot of the famous Blackpool tower where our welcoming party will cheer you across the finish line. The vibrant city of Blackpool makes a fitting end to this awesome ride - as does a post-ride meal of fish and chips on the seafront to celebrate!
