I have ridden all 4 of The Pendle Witches and it is my favourite Sportive.
Starting at the Craven Heifer, the friendliest pub in Rawtenstall with hot cups of Coffee or tea. A chance to admire those who had turned out in their immaculate Vintage Steel Steeds before they start 10 mins ahead of the rest. Fantastic scenery challenging climbs and then the finsish back a the pub with free Pie and Peas.
The pub venue is fantastic with many of the locals turning out to cheer us off and plenty to welcome us back and congratulate us. Such a friendly place.
The organisers have designed a commemorative jersey for each running of the event, at £30 they are a steal, and even better because £10 of that goes straight into the charity coffers.
This is one of those really special events which will become a classic, and every penny goes to alocal deserving charity, not one penny is used for anything else.
Becasue you know every penny raised is going to charity you really appreciate time the organisers put in to create the event

Found the route reasonably hard but so pleased I did this event. Weather wasn't great but every one I came into contact with; organisers, support folk, riders and staff in the Craven Heifer were great and very friendly. Arrived back at the pub cold and wet but soon greeted by a lovely pint of Vintage Velo beer and pie/peas. Add good banter with club mates and what more could you want. Top job - keep up the good work.

Great ride with friendly people and a relly testing route on a compact free bike.

In the 400th anniversary year of the trial of the Lancashire Pendle Witches what better way to mark the occasion than another running of the Vintage Velo from Rawtenstall. The ride is now in it's 3rd year and just gets better and better (though the weather doesn't). Sean McAdam and his team are creating something special with this event and it was oversubscribed this year. If you want a place next year, book early. Starting in the Craven Heifer Inn (why don't all sportives start and end in pubs?) the route takes in the iconic Lancashire climbs of Nick O'Pendle and Waddington Fell. The event has the feeling of a large club run rather than the industrial sizing of a sportive.
In homage to L'Eroica, the steel framed bikes take centre stage and set off 10 minutes before the Tawainese imports. Mind you, it doesn't take long for them to catch up as most riders were grinding away on 5 and 6 speed blocks with a 52 at the front. Fortunately the wind was kind and not too brutal on the major climbs and then it was a tailwind when we turned for home. Nick O'Pendle was as challenging as ever but our team made it up without a dab. After stocking up at the Dunstall Bridge foodstop (read home made cakes, pies and biscuits) it was a 30 mile run for home.
Back at the Craven Heifer the atmosphere was what this ride is really about. Most people hang around for their complimentary pie and peas washed down by a special Moorhouse's brew; Vintage Velo. This is what sets this ride apart, people want to stay, admire the bikes, talk about the route, the weather and their inadequate gearing. The raffle proved as memorable as last year with all our crew winning something. It's a pleasure to do this ride, and the money raised this year for worthy children's charities topped £3800. Thanks again to Sean and the crew. Cheers and see you all next year.

A good event, very friendly and well run. At a good price it's what a sportive should be. Lots of good banter and encouragement on hard but nice roads. The ride up Pendle still remains as hard as always. Thanks for a good day.

For those who did the Cheshire Cat last weekend this is the ideal event to get the stench of testosterone out of your nostrils. This was an outstanding small event. The ride was in aid of charity and the objective was to have a vintage theme which led to an orgy of Harry Hall 531c etc. The start was in a pub and the committee could not have been friendlier. Not sure whose idea a 5 difficulty rating was but it felt a lot harder than that. There were some great climbs and the wind and lack of compact chainsets just added to the day. What could be better than finishing in a pub and having complimentary pie, chips and peas.
Special thanks to the organisers for a great day out and I hope that it gets rerun next year. Sorry the rating dropped from 100% but that is the result of the way the scoring works. It was definitely a 100% day out. Thanks.
