Welcome to the Ken Laidlaw Sportive.

Start time: 9.00am

This event is organised by cyclists for cyclists, our hospitality is second to none and our success tells its own story.

With well surfaced roads and very little traffic, except for our support vehicles, motor bikes and British Red Cross team, the routes cover the magical lands of the Scottish Borders which never fail to impress and cast its beauty on travellers.

All entrants receive all of our excellent services, facilities and gifts.  Photos are free online.

The Short route, 74km challenge (46miles) follows 35miles of the long route and then turns off for the feed station. There are 5 big climbs totalling 1557m, see maps links for more details.

The Long route will take in the climbs of Bonchester Hill; The Note o' the Gate; Holm Hill; Eskdalemuir; The Berry Bush; The Swire; Woll Rig and The Leap Linns.  The Berry Bush and Swire are part of the Gordon Arms Trophy Hilly TT course.

The Short route turns for home after the Newcastleton feed stop and follows a pleasant but challenging run back to Hawick.

Brief history of Hawick Cycling Club who organise and run the event.

History

Hawick Cycling Club was formed as Hawick Bicycling Club in 1881 and is believed to be the oldest club in continuous existence in Scotland. The club began with 29 members in its first year, and changed its name to Hawick Amateur Bicycle Club within a few years. In 1901, the name was changed again, this time to Hawick Cycling Club. By 1905, the club boasted a membership of 148 gentlemen and 28 ladies. The Club presently has around fifty members.

This picture of some of the early members of the Club is believed to date from early in the 1900's.

The Club has had some famous members in its past, including the Blakely twins, Bobby Scott and Ken Laidlaw. The latter was a member of the Great Britain team at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, and in 1961, he was the first Scot to ride in the Tour de France.

The current club strip highlights its heritage back to 1881
