The London Ditchling Devil

30/06/2019 - Wimbledon - Audax

Welcome to the 9th Edition of The  London Ditchling Devil, a 200km Audax from Wimbledon in South London visiting Ditchling Beacon and The Devils Dyke along the South Coast before coming home to Richmond Park. The event started in 2011 to become the largest Brevet Randonneur event in the AUK calendar with 400 riders taking part.

The Ditchling Devil is a traditional non-competitive day tour where the emphasis is simply on completing the route and enjoying the day. We start outside the Windmill tearooms on Wimbledon common and ride out of London through Chipstead to the elevenses stop at Highbrook Village hall nr Ardingly (50km). From there its more quiet country roads towards the coast where we bounce of Brighton via Ditchling Beacon and the Devils Dyke before heading for lunch at Upper Beeding Village Hall near Steyning (105km). Then it's an easy hop over to Chiddingfold (146km) for some afternoon tea and cake - can you spot a pattern here? - before the gradual climb towards the Surrey Hills and the final dash for home to the Rose of York P.H. near Richmond Park (205km).

How hilly is it? The landmark climbs will stretch your legs but with a total ascent of 2400m it's officially not hilly.  But its an Audax - a day tour - not a race - so you've time to take your time. Most take 10-12 hours to complete the route, including refreshment stops, so if you are up for a good day out this is the event for you (and if you decide to stop at Brighton and have an afternoon at the beach, then that's fine too!).

Catering at the controls is provided by local community groups: Highbrook Village Hall, Brighton Excelsior Cycling Club (Upper Beeding, nr Steyning) and Chiddingfold Joint Church Committee, and as this is an Audax we are talking real food: bacon rolls, pasta and lashings of tea and home made cakes. What's not to like?

Entry includes:
  • Brevet card, detailed routesheet and GPX track
  • 3rd Party Insurance for UK Riders,
  • Elevenses, Lunch and Afternoon stops

There is free 'dawn to dusk' parking available but leave the car at home and ride up. Nothing beats riding down to the coast and back all under your own steam!

Entry for AUK & CTC Members £17.50 Others £19.50 - Click here for online entry

You can also find the Ditchling Devil on YACF. rider Caven' O'Hara rode in 2013, and named it one of the 'Top Events of the year''. "I've picked this event for a number of reasons. The cost of entry is low by today's standards, but that doesn't reflect the quality of the event. In fact, what you get is an excellent, well-organised and friendly event. It was epic day out, departing early in the morning with an enthusiastic bunch from south London".

Other rider feedback from 2014:

"Yesterday was my first ever Audax (shame on me I didn't know about them) yet everything was just wonderful. The route itself, the rest points, the fantastic food and the wonderfully helpful and kind organising team throughout. I am aching all over today but still feel very proud of the achievement of completing the course but none of it would have been possible without the team. Thanks for letting me be part of this awesome event."

"Thank you to you and everyone of your club/team who made yesterdays ride absolutely fantastic. I've never done an Audax ride before and I can honestly say it was one of the best days in the saddle I've ever had.The route was fantastic and the feed stations were immense. The weather was spot on and we couldn't have asked for more.

"I am a relatively new convert to Audax having become frustrated by the commercial element of large sportives. Following my first Audax in November 2013 I was instantly hooked by the camaraderie and relaxed non competitive aspect of these events."

"The staff, food, facilities etc at all the checkpoints were superb.  The route was fantastic (this was my first 200km) going through some lovely villages and, where possible, avoiding busy roads. I will look forward to the next event."
